New characters and storylines but... what else could happen?

Kill/flee bad group.

Kill zombies in between and more drama.

I don't know... I don't even know what else could happen to make it interesting.

95% they won't because Robert Kirkman said he liked uncertainty and the audience not knowing how it started.

He also said on season 1 they committed the mistake of saying Paris was also affected, but then on season 2 they said they don't know if it's only the US or the entire world.
