Because part of the "F1 atmosphere" was having your ears suffer like 130dB of sound when you were at the races, back when they used V10s it would be physically painful to be near the track.
A lot of people who paid to go to the races (you have to book months in advance for the good seats) were really disappointed with how quiet they were, which is a fair comment, but people acted as if the sport was ruined.
Honda have proven that you can use the new V6 turbos and be amazingly loud and sound good though, so yeh
My car has rusted exhaust and sounds almost exactly probably 20x quieter than those things.
Sounds kinda like a motorcycle and I like it, can't imagine how loud it is driving those F1 cars
It's not the end that I fear with each breath, it's life that scares me to death

At times it sounds like it wants to kill you
Ah figured as much, but I assume people do use protection though? Could be dangerous.
