It doesn't quite work how you might expect - it basically gets added on to the end of your existing subscription, whenever that is.
If you have a monthly renewing sub, you don't get a 'month off' where you don't have to pay - your subscription carries on as normal, just whenever you stop renewing it, your free credit will be added on then.
Ditto if you renew by any other method - your free credit will be added on whenever your existing credit runs out.

It depends on the picture - sometimes I will go round the whole CM department with a list and take votes. For example that's what I did with the Golden Gnome Guitar Hero one a few months ago - the winners were a true group decision.
But generally if I've used a picture of a specific person, I will let that person choose the winners - so the ones that won this month were entirely Mod Captain's choices. (He also chose a couple of notable mentions, and I picked out a few more.)

Good question! Here's how I do it.
1) Sort all the correct email entries into one mailbox.
2) Count how many emails there are.
3) Count how many posts there are on the forum thread.
4) Toss a coin to decide whether the first winner will come from the thread or from a mail. Heads = thread, tails = mail.
5) Go to a random number generating website and get a number between 1 and however many entries there were.
6) Match that number with the person at that position on the list.
7) Repeat steps 4-6 until all the prizes have been allocated.

I haven't forgotten but we've been pretty busy - I will do them ASAP using the random-number method I described above.

Thanks for the insightful posts Jon.
Course now I wonder if I should send the answer as an email and post on the thread.
And looks like it'll be January before I get it, then. I bought a 90 day card recently for a rather nifty katana so it bumped my membership to January, when I normally pay for a full year in October.
