@ Wild Bill63 - When the rule against religious discussions on the Off Topic Forum was removed, it was done so with the note that those threads would be closely monitored and moderated.

Your thread title and opening post stated that the thread was gathering responses for research purposes. You did not specify what you were using the research for, beyond "something I'm writing". It would have been helpful if you had given a bit more detail about the purpose. Most times when we see someone asking for replies or doing a survey, they are very open about what the replies will be used for, such as 'research for a paper/thesis/project at XYZ University' or 'to gather background information for a magazine/online publication article'.

If your thread was truly for research, then your own responses on the thread should simply have been the "Thanks for the input" that you started with. However, you went on to make comments on some of the replies; bringing up discussions that you'd had in the past with users; asking to have further conversation in-game - all of which are not something that one expects to see on a thread that is "for research purposes", and seemingly having nothing to do with the replies you requested.

While you may not see your responses as "debating", they certainly appeared to indicate that the purpose of the thread was not for an actual research project, as implied by your thread's title and opening post. The result being the same, the thread being locked.

If you wish to collect responses for research purposes in the future, it would be best if you provided more detail about what that purpose actually is, and perhaps a link to a reputable survey site (such as Survey Monkey) so that you can collect the responses anonymously.
