I am a retired player of Runescape. I have been through many updates and changes to the game. The removal of free-trade and the changes to the Wilderness forced me to try another game (world of warcraft).
If free-trade and the wilderness are restored to its original state, I may consider playing again. I do have a few things that I would like kept:
The wilderness ditch: This is a great thing that really helps people from getting lured in. It was a major issue 5 years ago.
The current pvp areas: The new pvp areas (clan wars and the arena) should be kept as pvp areas. Some people prefer arena style pvp. However, the lobbies should be pvp free.
While playing other games, I have learned makes a good game. When players loose their items, they get angry. So, I think that a good replacement is to have players keep their items when they are killed in the wilderness. Players would instead drop another type of currency that is collectable that can be traded for other goods. Similar to how the Fist of Guthix game works. But, if you are holding this new currency and are killed, your pvp currency is lost. So you have to bank it for it to stay safe (as with gold).
The new pvp currency could be used to purchase new gear that is more pvp oriented and/or trade goods.
I hope to see the old Runescape come back. I was a runecrafter and I enjoyed thwarting pvp'ers! It was a joy and since the "danger" was removed I lost interest in the game because I couldn't give my new friends any items to help them out. I understand that real world trade is bad. But do other game companies really mind? I haven't seen anyone other than Jagex so strictly crack down on real world trade as to prevent it from happening.
I really do hope to see some changes. Runescape was a good experience and I really enjoyed the game until the trade changes.

Personally i find this a terrible idea. absolutley horrible. In my early years playing runescape, I had been scammed for nearly everything I, AND my friend had, due to a lure. The reason i had everything my friend owned was because of THE FREE TRADE, because of a believable lure into the wilderness. As simple as that I'd lost everything. Lots of people have learned better, although some may not be to knowledgable. If you'd ever go to youtube, you could see that there are hundreds of videos about being "lured" into the wilderness, and killed unknowingly for their partyhats, and who knows how many millions.
Even the voting process is broken! You can vote multiple times!
Have you payed any attention to what would happen to the economy? What happens to every single expensive pvp oriented weapon? What happens to Chaotic? The reason an armadyl godsword is so expensive now, is because its valuable to pkers. Now? If you get caught with low prayer points, you can die and lose everything you have. They used to be safe! Now, this update would mean they could be smited, lured, and lost as easy as 1, 2, 3. No longer can you risk taking highly priced items to corporeal beast, or to keep you safe while doing clue scrolls. All gone. Good bye economy, good bye safe pvp, and hello real world trading and luring.
I've already lost everything once. And i'm damn well not willing to have it happen again.
People don't like updates because they don't like adaptation. Look at constitution? There was so much raging and now everything is fine. No one cares. People accept the changes. What you've done is for the better. Free trade would be a nice thing to have back, but you would have to crack down on the security to prevent scamming in the trade system. The grand exchange should DEFINATELY be kept, so players have an idea of the value of the items their trading.
I may come around sooner or later, but i would like to see the greater details.
