Introduction

Welcome to the October edition of the Gielinor Globe, the RuneScape forums' very own monthly community newsletter.
As the nights in Cambridge are growing ever longer, I was reminded of tales told by firelight on crisp winter evenings. I spoke to the Stories forum community and asked them to send in some of their best RuneScape short stories, and they didn't let me down. You'll find two of the stories later in the newsletter, I really hope you love them as much as I do.
If you're inspired to write your own mini-masterpiece, send it through to me at [email protected] - please include 'newsletter' in the subject line, and make sure you give me your username too!
Read on to find out more about the latest RuneScape quest, enjoy our two short stories, get your brain whirring with this month's Quiz Quest, and rejoice that the Caption Competition is back!
Don't forget! If you register an email address for your account, you can get ten extra F2P bank spaces. Head here to register your email address now.

Gunnar's Ground

Why doesn't the barbarian village have a proper name? Why are these savage warriors living deep inside civilised lands? Why is there a dwarf slumped against the wall of their village, looking miserable? Take a trip west of Varrock to find out!
This new quest, for both free-players and members alike, delves into the history of the barbarian village. Gunnar's Ground focuses heavily on the story and the characters in it, but there's still time for RuneScape's first poetry puzzle. Free-to-play mages will find the new rewards especially interesting. Although this is a novice quest, additional rewards are available to high-level crafters.

Competition Update

We’ve spent the last month recovering from the epicness that was the Golden Gnomes! The competition was hugely successful and the culminating award ceremony at RuneFest went off without a hitch! The Golden Gnomes were given to some of the most talented video makers we’ve come across and I think everyone will agree they were well definitely deserved.
Looking to the future we’ve got some awesome competitions planned, none of which we want to talk about in detail just yet! More information will follow, so do keep an eye out and don’t forget to check back for the next competition update.

Clan Update

As we prepare for the next instalment of the Clan Submissions Blog, let’s take the opportunity to look back at the previous blogs and what we’ve covered for almost a year now! That’s right, it’s a trip down memory lane but not the memory lane that got infested with zombies, that lane of travelling is sadly blocked off.
Back in December 2009, we released our first Clan Submissions Blog and the first blog ever centred on submissions from the community. This was a major step in opening up communication between Jagex and the clan community as well as a massive opportunity for clans to show off their talent for artwork, writing articles and much more. The first month was difficult because we were asking for submissions for something that no-one had seen before but thanks to The BlacKnights , Heart Unit , Obsidian Ancients , RuneScape Elites and the Caped Carousers for their submissions.

Artwork from the February’s blog, The Shadow Dragons, Crimson Paladins and Supreme Skillers.
Since then, as you would say, the rest is history but we’ve also had a few famous clans and clanners interviewed on the blog. We interviewed The Sabres , one of RuneScape’s oldest clans in January’s blog, The Titans in March who have been a big clan for a number of years and won the Jagex Cup in 2009 as well as an interview with Mod Mat K in April and his experiences of the clan world from his own RuneScape account.
In September’s edition of the Clan Submissions blog, we’re going back to the more normal format after the RuneFest/Jagex Cup special edition. The interview is with His Lordship , leader of the Wilderness Guardians and to get you in the mood for the blog – here’s a sneak preview of one of the questions.
Mod Timbo: "How was the Wilderness Guardians formed and what's the story behind the name?
His Lordship: I was a level 40ish character back in classic, earning my living by collecting chaos runes in the Dark Warrior's Fortress in the wilderness, when a team found me and used a door shutting technique to PK me. Well, I got upset and formed a clan, going around recruiting people who hated PKers, we were originally called the PK PK's. After 3 days I realised this was clearly a mistake. The Wilderness Guardians was an equally literal description of what we did, and it sounded a little nicer. Since then my stance of PKing has changed somewhat, for the better I hope, but our core belief remains - that combat should be played out honourably.

Logan Shafts

Toil
Sweat found its way slowly down my brow, fighting its way through the mud which clung fiercely to my skin.
I brought my weapon around again, hacking away fiercely at my opponent. The seemingly useless thing clanked futilely against rock-hard defences.
This battle seemed to have been lost already. No matter how hard I struck, I simply couldn't defeat this foe. My endurance was wearing thin, and all my attempts thus far at victory had been pitiful at best.
My enemy seemed to taunt me, though not a word was spoken. My shoulders slumped.
Suddenly like an epiphany, I found a weak spot, and I took my shot. I brought my weapon around over my head for one final blow.
It shattered through my opponent’s defenses, and metal clanked to the ground. Relief flooded through me, the tenseness of my muscles finally beginning to subside.
I slowly gathered the coal into my backpack, before finally setting off towards the bank once more.
Perhaps next time I would try Woodcutting.

Twenty Paces
Denulth, the Burthorpe commander, was drinking in the Toad and Chicken when a shadow fell across the front of the inn.
He calmly drained his Asgarnian, then slowly turned to look.
The double doors rattled forcefully inwards and a monstrous shape appeared on the threshold. Unfortunately they sprang shut again just as forcefully, catapulting the looming figure back into the street.
A few moments later they creaked open slowly and a huge troll, stooping double, squeezed cautiously into the room.
"Gnar! What coward jus' kicked me out? All oi wanted wuzza drink."
Pushing his stool back with a clichéd scrape, Denulth stood.
"Your kind ain't welcome here, Mister Whatever-your-name-is."
"Troll-With-No-Name," responded the troll.
"Say what?"
"Troll-With-No-Name. Me mam 'ad no food when I wuz borned, so I dint get named anyfin," explained Troll-With-No-Name carefully.
"Uh, right. Troll-with-no..."
"No, it's me name. Use capitals."
Denulth cursed angrily. "Troll-With-No-Bleeding-Name! Darn it, I've forgotten my lines now." He reached for his well-worn Western phrasebook.
"Ah, here it is. I don't reckon there's enough room in this town for both of us. I'm..."
"Higher ceilings would 'elp. Me neck's killin' me," replied Troll-With-No-Name practically.
Denulth screamed in frustration.
"QUIET! You're COMPLETELY ruining the mood. Now here's what happens. I say there ain't room for both of us, blah-blah-blah, and you ask me who do I think I am? I tell you I'm the law. I should have a star-shaped badge but it's not been written into the object database yet. Then we go outside to duel."
Troll-With-No-Name blinked in confusion.
"We pull out our six-shooter 'fixed devices' and each load a single red-dyed toad. I'm just writing your name on this one. Then we stand back to back, walk twenty paces, turn and fire. Whoever's left standing takes the yet-to-be-implemented star badge and runs the town. Capiche?"
Due to a stiff word-count limit the reader must assume that those events did indeed transpire, so we'll skip to the part where Denulth and Troll-With-No-Name are striding apart, 'fixed devices' loaded and ready.
"Eighteen... Nineteen... Twenty!"
Denulth span around sharply, levelling his 'fixed device’. Pulling the trigger, he launched his amphibious assault with deadly aim.
Splatch!
The toad landed harmlessly in the deserted street.
"Darn it," muttered Denulth. "I knew twenty troll paces were too many."

Who the Zamorak?

Last month's 'Who the Zamorak?' had an air of silliness about it. Guess what? It was Mod Mark H! Well done to those of you who guessed correctly.
This month we have 10 more strange-but-true clues to the identity of a mystery J Mod. We can't wait to see your guesses.
All the clues are true (and ever so slightly odd), but that is half the fun. So put your thinking caps on and unravel the mystery – answer next month!
  • I’m often confused with another J-Mod.

  • Quentin Blake received an honorary doctorate at my graduation.

  • I helped with the Dungeoneering release video by playing one of the characters.

  • I’ve met Prince Philip.

  • I’ve been at Jagex for three years.

  • I created a record cover for a drum and bass artist.

  • I think that most cakes can be improved by adding more icing (you may know it as frosting).

  • I was killed by a cow when I first started playing RuneScape.

  • I am death to house plants (even hardy cacti).

  • I know how to say potato in quite a few languages - you never know when you may need it! Om nom nom. ^_^
