I'd suggest downloading Vegas from the offical Sony website else you could be doing either the following:
Downloading a bad file
Downloading a program illegally (keygen/crack)

Here's a few tips for starters:
1.Make sure you have a screen recorded (I suggest Fraps for HD/Fullscreen) but if you going to record in Standard Detail I suggest Camtasia.
2. For the edits, just Sony Vegas and After Effects(if you have some talent).

Editing:
Try not to add too many effects, it will just ruin the video. Some green screen here some color light there and the video will be perfect.
Note: Jagex doesn't look for the most edited video, they are looking for the most entertaining video.
Also, try make the video to be worth watching over and over again because even if you don't win the competition, you will win some subscribers/friends/fans etc.

Edit:Also try adding more sound effects and voice acting, that will increase your chances. A plain video won't help you with anything.

Hey guys, here about the machinima contest. I have a great idea but before I pitch/make the idea I'm going o wait for the Orb and see if that can help me in making my entry better, also I'm waiting because I DO watch all the entry's that are submitted to see how people are doing, I will be submitting my entry at the very end of the contest so I can make use of all the time I've been given (But I hope they don't pick 4 runners up before they get to my entry!! :P )

As already explained in clan chat - If someone has the same problem, read this.
Line in requires no installation. However once plugged into the correct port (the pink slot or the one with the microphone icon next to it) you need to set your default microphone to line in.
WINDOWS XP:
Go into your sound settings (Taskbar, double click the sound icon)
Go to Options and hit Properties.
Select 'Recording' and you want Line-In selected.
It should work.

Lord, Your Microphone is a Line in, this means you can plug it into your Pink port (Microphone) Not to get mixed up with the green one (That is your port for speakers) You SHOULD have 2 of these on your computer; One on the back and front, each on your computer, if you plug this in (As I know you're running on XP) This should work, If not, there should be a small speaker icon on the right hand bottom side of your screen (The bit were your clock is and such).
Click on this and make sure everything is turned up (Including SW Synth) and this should work, If not, try the different port, If all else fail, consult a J-mod or a consultant professional about the problem, or fine another voice actor. I hope I helped you.
