To avoid other people their threads getting clogged I decided to make a new one. Following Eeon Shaper I too am trying to understand W42 and I got some questions I hope to get answered after having asked around a lot.

1 I noticed that people have become more accepting of the high fantasy bits of lore these days. We barely touched necromancy or custom races for example! But these days you have apparently two Asgarnias, one with a vengfull attempt to get back at someone and the other apparently has quite a powerful and unlikely leader. And catgirl vampyres are a thing too now? What happened? Did the lack if players stop people from being picky or did the overal mentality change?

2 when I was talking to Ridaku he also used gameplay things to back up his characters story. From my understanding I thought this was done by themeplayers and those have never been involved in the POKs. Has this changed?
I heard some calling it cherry picking the lore and I must say I agree. I talked to Dansplainer about it and he put it quite well though I can’t remember what he said exactly.

3 I talked to some people about necromancy too. I am not caught up with lore on undead but during my time everything zombie related would be concidered unholy and jumped from all corners. Has something changed? Are undead concidered ‘good’ enough due to a lore event and can they properly with the general public without being bad guys?

4 The welcome thread has been replaced sort of, it is now called a quick guide, super cool! But why is the other one not replaced with the ultimate catch-up guide that Syncreticeye has? It’s super good, maybe the quick guide and the ultimate can work it out! It should at least get a 3rd sticky don’t you guys think? I know the other guide is the main one we passed over through the years but it seems super outdated and those other two guides put it to shame imo. Or maybe we can make it a community effort to update the main guide? Just shooting ideas.

Undead are still very bad, and in fact, recent lore (in the form of a Third Age Military document provided by Mod Jack in the "Lore Official" channel of the official RuneScape discord) suggests that even Zamorak himself isn't a fan of undead, due to their effects on morale.

Really cool! Thanks a lot! You don't happen to have some documents about the whole Sliske war thing or pointers to where I can read up on all that?

Hi! Firstly, welcome back. I want to prelude this by telling you to take anything you hear from most people out of this community with a grain of salt. We tend to dramatize things when unnecessary and some try their hardest to turn the ear of newer/older folk.

1. RuneScape is very high fantasy, and with the new additions we have to the lore and story of the game it's sort of easier for us to play more into it. I personally adore high fantasy settings and a lot of my RP experiences comes from D&D/TTRPG games that feature similar settings. Some people are the same and enjoy it, but you'll find that others still prefer the more normalized, gritty, no-magic or low-magic style of RPing.

2. Cherry picking is a good term for it, honestly. You have the issue with what lore should be used and what shouldn't, and the same applies to game mechanics. There are things that the Jagex Moderators themself have confirmed are simply mechanics of the game (the abilities on your action bar in EOC, for example), but a lot of it is still unclear. People tend to pick and choose what benefits themself the most, rather than what might make more sense overall in as a rule. I'm not sure exactly what RiDaku refers to.

3. Necromancy is widely seen as evil, a direct insult to the balance of life and death, and an affront to anything good and holy. Nothing has changed there. Can a necromancer interact with people without being straight-up evil? Probably! But the act of animating a corpse often involves desecrating graves, taking bodies against the will of their previous owner(as if they had a say), and instilling it with a facsimile of life. It creates an evil creature in the process generally.

If you're asking me if it's reasonable that a person who dabbles in such craft can hang in the public and be a happy dude, I'd argue yes. If you're asking if I, or most others, think it's reasonable that an undead entity could exist in leadership underneath the insanely strict Saradomin, an exemplar of what should be lawful, just and good, I'd probably say that is unreasonable. Throw in an undead dragon and I'll be even more skeptical. Even Zamorak thought somewhat negatively about such creatures.

4. I think that's a good idea, actually. Sync's thread is good enough, IMO, to be stickied, and Lozz's is short, sweet, and easy to absorb. I'm not really sure who exactly decides what is worth being stickied.

It'd take a bit too long to summarize the events of Sliske's Endgame and the events leading up, so I'd suggest reading the transcripts of the series.

In order:

https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript:Missing,_Presumed_Death

https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript :D ishonour_among_Thieves

https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript:Nomad%27s_Elegy

https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript:Kindred_Spirits

https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript:Children_of_Mah

https://runescape.wiki/w/Transcript:Sliske%27s_Endgame

They offer some insight into the nature of the gods, the magic of belief, a bit on magic in general, as well as some info about the Mahjarrat, the shadow realm, the afterlife, and more. Go nuts, my dude!

No, only a small handful of people accept this, and that's the same group of people that have an undead dragon nestled atop their castle. As for more high fantasy bits, I suppose, but most people try to keep to the norm or "how things used to be". The two Asgarnias thing is a matter of who you yourself choose to acknowledge. People are still very picky and that's pretty evident by the fact that there's two Asgarnias because many don't want to acknowledge Ridaku's canon, yet some do.

People disagree with the way Ridaku handles his RP canon, just like he might disagree with us, again, this is why there are two Asgarnias. It's unfortunate.

#3 necromancy

Necromancy is still very much frowned upon, especially in a holy Saradomnist city. I believe it's not common knowledge ICly that Ridaku's character is a wight? But there's a whole different set of issues there anyways, needless to mention the probability of Saradomin allowing an undead dragon in Falador is very low.

#4 ultimate catch up guide

I definitely agree with slapping Syn's thread with a sticky.

In the end, it's up to you who you choose to acknowledge in public RP, as messy as it may be. Mind that just because you choose to acknowledge one group over another, doesn't mean you can't go and RP with the group you don't acknowledge. Nowadays it's good to have a lot of RPs to go to when you're looking for RP, considering how small the community is.

1. People are still picky, and this feeds ongoing grudges left, right and centre. There are two Asgarnias partially for this reason.

2. I'm not sure what feature you are talking about specifically, you would have to specify what aspect of themeplay he utilised. Generally, though, themeplay doesn't occur.

3. Necromancy is still largely Zamorakian. Almost anyone else (except for maybe the odd Zarosian or curious mage) abhors it.

4. Last I heard, the mods don't want to mess with the stickies, unless they have very good reason to. The whole sticky subject is controversial and a bit of a rabbit hole. In the past, there has been some disputing about the legitimacy of one... Yes, Syncreticeye's thread is great though, and I'd be happy if it received a sticky.

catgirl vampyres

I've heard this a few times, and it's not even close to what's going on. In fact, the first time I heard that, I caught whiplash. There are no examples of vampyres in my group, and despite the fact that I see no problem with catgirls or any sort of gene-spliced race (we have numerous examples of mixed creatures coming about in-lore), I can very confidently say that we also don't have any catgirls. I believe that rumor came from one of my RPers walking in to the rising sun wearing cat-ear overrides, and then changing them off after remembering they had them on. Telephone games are fun, aren't they?

Unfortunately, the first post of this thread gives a good hint that some previous discussions were just sea-lioning. What a shame.
