You and Your Article • The Shell

The layout of your article is very important; having a sloppy layout that is hard to follow can derail the reader's thought process and render them uninterested in your content.

Paragraph One - A brief, one sentence long introduction to the topic. You must include, if known, the date at which the topic happened.

"On Essinday 23rd Septober, Father Andy of the Lumbridge Saradominist Church was found dead after multiple stab wounds to the chest."

Paragraph Two - A more detailed introduction. Here, you must briefly outline the line of events surrounding your article topic. Don't be scared to repeat yourself here!

"Father Andy was found dead outside Lumbridge's Combat Academy with several stab wounds to the chest. Reports suggest the Saradominist Father was on his way home after a late church sermon when he was presumably attacked by an unnamed attacker at roughly quarter-to-rune at night. Witnesses state seeing a "hooded figure" dressed in dark red robes, inclining officials to believe this a Zamorakian attack."

The Middle - This is where you describe, in order and as much detail as possible, any leads and other sections of information known to your reporter. This is where you should use quotes to support your information from any interviews you may have conducted.

"Witnesses suggest seeing a figure similar to the given description lurking around father Andy's Church of Saradomin earlier that day. Combined with the increase in Zamorakian activity, Captain Arthurs of the Lumbridge Guard strongly believes the attack was 'stemmed from the religious dispute between the two religions.'"

The Conclusion - This is where you round off your article to a close. You must use this space to summarize where the topic is currently in a clear and understanding manner.

"The Lumbridge Guard appear to have taken a very religious look upon the death of Father Andy, however the investigation is still on-going and no final verdict has been made.

Father Andy's funeral will be held at the Lumbridge Church of Saradomin on Duneday 26th Septober.The Gielinor Times sends their condolances to the friends and family of the deceased."

You and Your Article: The Content

The Middle - This is where you describe, in Articles are a very unique piece of writing; and columnists articles are very different to correspondents. Correspondents articles are composed purely of facts and quotes to support the news they're portraying of modern and most recent events. Where columnist's articles can be more free with their content - their topics can be more fictional and used a wider range of elaborate and different words.

Correspondents should aim to have at least two quotes in their articles. One of which should be given from a real, player owned character taken from an interivew you've conducted.

No lies! Only facts.

•
Correspondents should be direct with their content. Don't go off about how Sally had a red hat, which is the same colour of the dead man's blood which means she did it. Only write about the CLEAR facts and elaborate on them within reason.

Writing articles is not easy - and sometimes you need help! Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Sometimes you have everything for your article, but there's one little bit you're missing. Well, here's some ways you can ask for help,

Asking for Interviews - Sometimes not everything is public knowledge and we must go digging for information. Asking witnesses for interviews, or officials conducting investigations will give you some new content to play around with and compliment your article.
We ask that you aim to have at least one interview feature in an article.

Asking an Editor or Chief - Editors, Chief's and above are in their role because they've shown real skill and dedication with their role. Don't be afraid to ask them for guidance!
