Ok here where we live the school system has recorded messages
for things such as delays, or letting school out early cause of weather.

messages about ball games and tests etc.

Its funny here in our house cause we get called on both lanline phone and
the cell phone.

so today my husband and i answered the phone at same time to this message...

"The county school has had 3 rumors so far so we are putting this to rest now, as
not to continue with rumors and questions. The county school is NOT providing
litter boxes to students who identify as animals. we appreciate the concern tax
payers have over this issue so we wanted to put this rumor to rest as it is untrue"

This is a true story.

That hoax actually started in Canada, and was going around the USA last year. Even made the international press when schools started issuing denials. Made it to Scotland in January this year, too.

A Wikipedia article about it:

Hm... risky, they're opening themselves up to some easy criticism here. Making daft announcements like these 'could' be a covert way of demeaning those who identify as something outside 'the norm'. And yeah, I realise that identifying as a different gender is not the same as identifying as a cat, but think about the environment for a second: Adults like to lump things into groups, well, kids do too. This joke (I don't think anyone 'seriously' thinks tax money is going to be spent on cat litter trays for human use) could very easily extend to bullying. Diversity and inclusion is clearly a hot topic at the moment, so they COULD be more responsible. Maybe the announcer ought to have pursued a career in comedy instead.

Kind regards,
Karen

Lol. But for real, a school trying to be funny via ridicule. (I'm fine with ridicule, in the right context) but from a school? hmm. You see this 'trick' on the news, when they want to change the narrative around something; they'll exaggerate or trivialise it, compare the worst parts of something similar to it, etc. sounding serious but 'tongue in cheek'. After a while, that gets old! It's a sneaky way to shape peoples opinions into their own (which are often negative / intolerant / 'us vs them' type sentiments).

If I knew they didn't have a 'get out of jail free' card response of 'it was a rumour / it was someone else, you can't prove our intention! don't shoot the messenger!' etc, I'd go in and have a word with them. That's the thing with laughing off sensitive topics, they can do just as much harm. PS: I'm not siding with 'cat people', but all those that'll be categorised WITH them for being 'alternative'.

I just think this was a poor move by the school, IMO. If something is quite obviously daft, it doesn't need to be said? It reminds me of a time when I read 'may contain nuts' on the back of a peanut butter jar! "oh really!?" Lol. Sure, this is different, but it's still nuts!

Thanks for coming to my TED talk

After i told my daughter about this she couldnt believe it. Good thing it was recorded on the answering machine.

My thing, if its a hoax how come real schools are still making the calls?

i mean trust me, i have a mind to send a bag of kitty litter to school monday for my
son to just sit out in the bathroom. Back when the other 5 kids were little, it would have been a field day!!!

I assume we're looking for an answer more sophisticated than "because they're stupid" (jk)
Idk, clearly enough parents called up, so to save time they made a global announcement.

It is funny, but what a bunch of idiots they are for responding to it. Two outcomes: 1, kids discover that they can 'cry wolf' / troll to get their school to send daft announcements, and 2, the whole blanket discrimination 'thing' towards kids that identify as something 'different'.
