Trees are not always what they seem.

A unique thing about aspen trees is their ability to clone themselves. While the tree does produce seeds, a process known as “cloning” does most of the reproduction (cloning occurs when roots sprout new trees that share an identical genetic makeup). There can be many clones in an aspen grove or the entire grove can be one clone, whose leaves all turn at the same time.
In fact, there’s an aspen clone in Utah that covers 100 acres and has been estimated at 40 times the weight of a blue whale, making it the largest living thing on Earth – not to mention the oldest. Its age has been estimated at 80,000 years

It's name is Pando:

You can see how large it is when the leaves are yellow.

That's really impressive. Thanks for the tidbit!
I'm better than you, but that doesn't mean you're not great! :)

I love trees. My property has gone from an open field to a forest over the years.

Picture #21 is called 'Big Boabab' and lives in South America. It has a trunk circumference of 154 feet and can fit 60 people inside.

These trees can reach heights of 98 feet (as tall as an 8 story building) and hold 60,000 gallons of rainwater. They belong to the Succulent family.

I've bought a few of them to plant, but never had good luck with them. You almost have to have a perfect balance of wet and dry. Too wet and they rot or split...too dry and they wither away. I couldn't find that perfect balance.

Why are the pictures black and white?

Because they were taken with black and white film. When doing an extensive study, sometimes you have to go cheaper.

Hey guys! This week I took a quick adventure to Nevada to check in on two mining towns I've wanted to go to for a while. Gold Point, Nevada and Goldfield, Nevada. Both were important mining towns back in the day. Both provide inspiration and ideas on my efforts at Cerro Gordo.

On the way back, I stopped by the Bristlecone Pine Forest, home to the oldest trees in the world! It was a nice day off the mountain that gave me all sorts of new ideas.

What a beautiful array of trees you have there. Fifi's words certainly ring true, they are very surreal.

I had a thread a while back, different topic it was about old trees being held up by man made straps. I feel once a tree has become dangerous to its surroundings it's time for that tree to come down and plant a new tree in its place so we can all enjoy it for many years to come. I feel those man made straps ruin the look of these beautiful old trees.
If fat means flavour then I'm ******* delicious!

One thing I know is that there is a nature reserve near with an oak tree that is over 250 years old. Definitely the oldest tree I have seen.

The Great Oak.
