This is probably one of the oddest things I've ever done ...... waited days and days, checking with almost religious fervour, to see one flower open for such a brief time, miles and miles away from me.

Ikr! I've been doing the same. :D

My youngest son lives in Cambridge so we go there quite often...well we did before the pandemic. Next time we're able to visit and stay for a few days I want to go and see the cactus for real. The flower will be long gone by then.
