Now two of these things aren't the same... can you guys please not derail the thread with political flaimebait?
Oh hey, check it out, other than me, it's all mods on the first page too!
I think if you're looking for a good view of Niagara Falls, your best bet is a night view:
I'm better than you, but that doesn't mean you're not great!

IMO the Canadian side is way better than the American/New York side, although living in Canada maybe that's a little bias and having never visited Niagara Falls, New York, I can't really speak to how good or bad that side is.
I've been to the attractions on both sides - the view is better from the Canadian side for sure; as for the attractions, we liked the 'Cave of the Winds' on the American side better than the 'Journey Beneath the Falls' on the Canadian side - you get to take the walkways down to the bottom of the falls, which gets you really close (and of course, you get soaked too even when wearing the large rain ponchos they give you
). The Maid of the Mist boat ride was equivalent from either side from what I recall. I'm not sure if anything has changed since the last time I was out there 10 or so years ago.
Its definitely a sight to see, regardless of what time of year you make it there during. I've only been during the summer months but it was always a lot of fun going there. It would be cool to go during the winter, but I'd imagine it being extremely icy anywhere near the good overlook points.
The Canadian Horseshoe Falls is more impressive through shear water volume alone, but i enjoy the American side, which is the only way to get to Goat Island. I once filled a vial with water just upstream from Bridal Falls as a surprise for my wife (girlfriend at the time) while visiting a friend in Buffalo. She still has it.
I liked the Canadian side before they built the visitor center. You used to be able to get up to a wrought iron fence right at the corner of the Canadian Falls.
I have been there many times since childhood. I have camped, stayed on hotels and inns on both sides, and just driven up for a quick visit.
You will want to stay for more than 5 minutes.
I suggest staying overnight in Niagara-on-the-Lake, downstream from the falls, where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. They have lots of fine inns, the Shaw Theatre Festival, and lots of small shops, including one that makes maple candies as you watch.
A trip to Fort George is also a treat for the history buffs.
There are several fine wineries within a 15 minute drive as well.
Everyone should visit Niagara Falls at least once.
EDIT: I have always found the whirlpool rapids, downstream from the falls, fascinating as well.
EDIT: My wife and i were staying in Niagara-on-the-Lake with another couple while Denis Leary was filming
The Ref
. While the women watched the children, us guys went for a walk out in the snow. While walking we got invited to a cast party for the movie. We wisely declined and are both still alive and happily married to our wives.

Whenever we have family or friends visiting it's usually a trip there first to have a stroll around and a look in on all of the small independent stores, maybe grab a drink or some food before heading over to the Falls.
The drive between there and the Falls is nice too with the cycle track, awesome views of the river and Upstate New York.
Do it! You can't travel here yet anyway but getting your passport only gives you the opportunity to come here, doesn't mean you're committing quite yet.
Only one thing to be aware of, and nothing that is scheduled in the near future from what i have heard, but at least once in my life time they have "turned off" the falls for an extended period to remove rocks from the base of the falls.
The Niagara River generates a lot of hydro-electric power. Only one fall has been "shut off" at a time since the water has to go somewhere.
I was at the falls when the American Falls were off.
If you don't need to see frozen falls, September is a great time to go. There are several fruit farms with their own market stores along the Niagara Parkway that sell their produce and things such as preserves and pies made from said produce. They routinely have some of the best peaches i have ever tasted.
Get that passport soon.
