I would consider the "blacking out" of an arm indicates a lack of aesthetic imagination or vision. I know for sure this is not something that would describe you so I'm assuming it has another meaning for you that is lost on me. To me, a total black out looks like someone has had an accident with black hair dye.
I have seen some arms and legs worked on with tribal designs of such minute line detail that at first glance they appear to be blacked out but on closer inspection are a stunningly complex interconnecting linear designs that you can't take your eyes off.

so a rather big update for my tattoo progress. i am now in the talks of blacking out my left arm. this will be the next thing i do.
i havent been able to get tattooed for a while now. so long overdue one. might aswell just do my whole arm :shrugs:
Why black out your arm??
I just don't get that??
If I could I would try and talk you out of this and carry on with your art, there is just so much you can do with that arm over the next 40 - 50 years. Please don't rush into this... You may come across art/stuff later in life you haven't thought about yet.

a lot of people would think the same, and evidently i do disagree but i understand completely why people think this.
personally i love the aesthetic it gives. if its done correctly. (which is difficult to do to get the same depth of black through out a large area)
i am going to have 2 pieces of negative space on my hand and above my elbow. on my hand i already have the rabbit head tattoo which is staying, and above the elbow im having a negative space skull which will hopefully blend in with the black out surrounding
i guess there is a meaning for it but i wouldnt say its a huge one, to even warrant getting into. i love the look, i appreciate the artistic skill to do it, i want to experience it. those are the 3 main reasons i want it

i think one reason i want it is because dont understand it.
whats to say blacking out isnt art in itself? and just because its being blacked out doesnt mean the arm is now finished there is still lots one can do with a black out.
No way would I get my arm done like that. Looks odd.
I passed our local tattoo shop yesterday and no parking near it due to them all been taken up. If there was a space I'd have been in yesterday for a chat and catch up and discuss my next tattoo.
Have the cash ready. Design ready. Just don't want to wear a mask inside for 3-5 hours. I struggle with 30 mins while shopping.
