when will fossil fuels be retired.
When alternative energy sources become cheap, effective and accessible enough to replace them completely.

I can't help wondering how all the electricity is going to be generated that will be needed to power everything.
We will all be required to shave our heads and strap little solar panels to them. Power will be stored in a battery (which we'll need to cart around with us in a backpack) then when we get home we can boil a kettle off it. Maybe.
We'll also have little wind turbines attached to our arms and legs, again feeding into our storage battery. Obviously we'll all be required to be outside a lot to make this work but that's good because if we're outside we're not using power indoors.
While we're out we'll be collecting dried cow poo to use as fuel (plus windfall wood, acorns, chestnut husks, that sort of thing). We can also collect dried grass to stuff inside our clothes to keep warm, thereby further saving on power required.
We'll all have to give up our cars etc of course. So no more commuting for anyone! How wonderful. We can all become self-contained communities and commence inbreeding.
Household appliances will have to go too, naturally. But think of the wonderful community spirit when you're down at the local stream bashing your dirty clothes against the rocks. And no more Cybercrime - even more splendid. We'll gather in a community hut to sing our oral histories and educate the little 'uns.
I expect we'll still have to pay Council Tax though, so make sure to breed lots of children and sell their organs to raise the money.

This is something the green party in my country don't want to talk about ... They want to increase the prices of non-electric fueled vehicles, increase tax on petrol and diesel (thus driving up the price to end consumers), introduce "zero emission zones" in cities, stop searching for more sources of oil and natural gas, and down the line phase out the petroleum sector by 2035.
"We need the wise minds of the oil industry to build the renewable industries this century demands of us" being an actual quote from them when asked for what's happening when we've no longer have any oil left, which the entire country's wealth fund is built on.
For now we're at least producing a lot of electricity through hydropower, but we're now selling off a significant amount of that to Germany through the recently built "world longest underwater cable" NordLink...

Electric cars is the way to go.
Any idea what the components of the electric car batteries are?
Where the raw materials come from?
Who manufacture the batteries?
How much energy is required to make the batteries?
How the energy is produced to manufacture electric cars?
How long is the lifespan of electric car batteries?
How to dispose of electric car batteries and what the environmental impact is?
