were on the table a minute ago!
There's someone on the phone for you! What do
they
want?
For the first example there could be 8 pairs of glasses, who knows? What do you mean "they were"? Where are they now? I know I said "they" because we're not taking about "a spectical", we're talking about "glasses"... "pair of glasses".... To make the point again, "pair of glasses" So I'm sorta ok with that answer even though "on the table" should service.
For example #2. Seems like a presumptuous question.... do people regularly screen your calls without asking for a name and not passing on the reason for the call? Wouldn't "who is it?" Be a more reasonable response? I wouldn't say a person + a phone is plural anyway so I'm not completely against the question.... it just seems like a silly presumptuous rude question.... and if anyone spoke to me like that I'd respond by saying "ask them yourself".
except it never would have gone like that because when I answer the phone I ask who's speaking.

I'm going to give this a lock, as it's a thread designed to delve into a discussion about gender and preferred pronouns, which runs contra to the rule here regarding political discussion.
