I vaguely remember a thread about this a few years ago, but I couldn't find it so I thought I'd start a new one.

I've suffered from insomnia for years - it used to take me forever to fall asleep, so long in some cases that I'd give up, get up and read a book or watch some TV.

Oddly though, I've been experiencing the opposite lately - I fall asleep within minutes... but wake up really early - if it's 4 or 5 am I can usually drop off again, but if it's 6 or 7 am I can't get back to sleep.

I know from experience that I need a minimum of around 8 hours (preferably 9) to feel ok the next day.

I'm not expecting anyone to post a miraculous cure but it's a fairly common thing, so I wondered if anyone wanted to share any thought, tips etc.

Or, if you just want to have a grumble about it, feel free!

Interesting thread. I remember the old 1. ;)

I used too have an issue getting off to sleep. I sorted that with reading a book for 1 hour. But making sure I finished a chapter. After I trained my mind I was fine for years.

I also have the issue of getting up at odd hours. I put part of the blame on my dog as she needs a tinkle. So I've to get dressed and take her out lol. I'm wide awake then.

Also one thing that really did help me train my sleep the best was Lettuce. I'd eat 3-5 leaves 15 mins before bed. Yes they do work or did for me. Got me into a good sleep patten. I don't eat them any more only have them with meals.

I really do think it's training your mind to do things you want it to do and not let your mind tell you to do other things. It's very hard but it can be done.

I goto bed now between 9-10pm and up around 5-8am most days but Sundays is bad. Got up this Sunday at 4.30am because I was excited to watch the live British Grand Prix.

You also need to be active during the time you are up. Beit RS or gardening or something that keeps you busy. I know if I'm busy during the day then at night I'm good for a nice sleep.

It's for me down to mind training. Get that sorted and I'm good.

Yeah what Tuffty said is some good advice.

I have a few ways to get to sleep, but to somehow clear my mind and try to not think of anything that has happened during the day is a good way to get to sleep for me.

I get intermittent bouts of insomnia. Usually I listen to music at low volume or sometimes a nature sounds app on my phone.

The ones with mix 'n' match sounds capability are the best, especially if they all have their own volume sliders too. You can really fine tune them to get something that makes you feel peaceful and cosy.

whenever I have trouble sleeping, i try some Chamomile Tea or "Sleepy time" tea. If I have some serious trouble getting to sleep, I try OTC dyphenhydramine, but i'm very cautious about that. Music and such can relax me, but not put me to sleep. John 4:20

Listening to rain etc but not too high a volume.

Disclaimer.

Not sure if the adverts play on these 1's and how long for. So try and find 1 thats advert free. You don't want adverts every 20 mins playing some crappy loud music lol.

Thanks for the comments and tips everyone :)
I might look out for those gummies, I've never tried Melatonin.

I've tried relaxing music/sound effects but find that I need absolute silence to fall asleep, my brain focuses on even the tiniest sounds.

I tried something a bit different last night - going to bed earlier.
As usual (at the moment anyway) I suspected I'd wake up early so I went to bed at 10.30, which is really early for me, and managed to sleep through till 7 am.

Feel a bit groggy this morning for some reason but I'll see how the day goes.

I feel lucky because I rarely have problems getting to sleep but when I can't drop off I read a book. I don't want to disturb my husband so I use a book light. It doesn't always work because if its an exciting story I'm eager to find out what happens next, especially if the main characters are getting shot at!
