There are many extraordinary things about Captain Sir Tom Moore. Perhaps one of the most extraordinary things about his actions is the fact that the very act of walking caused him pain. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer and skin cancer, and was recovering from a fall which left him with a punctured lung and several broken bones. For me, what was so inspiring was his determination to fight through the pain to complete his goal.
But it's about more than just that. His actions inspired a nation (and possibly even the world) to participate in fundraising activities. People of all ages walked around their gardens in a similar fashion to Captain Sir Tom, earning money for their own charities. That legacy will continue for years to come.
He raised a record amount of money for something that he strongly believed in. He gave people hope when they didn't know where to turn. He inspired hundreds of people of all generations to begin fundraising activities. He served his country during the Second World War, and remained devoted to his country during its greatest peacetime crisis.
Yes, he received numerous awards and recognitions, and a wide variety of things have been named after him. However, a statue would be a lovely touch, and a fitting tribute.
