What a wonderful gesture to build a statue to commemorate Captain Tom :)

I just read an article on this, sorry I didn't link it, it was a little political so I thought best not to.

Captain Sir Thomas Moore, popularly known as Captain Tom, was a British Army officer and businessman known for raising money for charity in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the COVID-19 pandemic - Wikipedia

What an honour for a great man :)

I remember last year reading about Captain Tom fund raising for National Health Service charities. This man in his 100th year became world famous for a wonderful cause. He's an incredible man and what a wonderful honour to have a statue to remember him by, he passed away recently.
If fat means flavour then I'm ******* delicious!

OK, I'll play Devil's Advocate for this one.

Many people raise large amounts of money for charity; often, the Queen gives them medals for it (e.g. MBE, OBE).

Many people also donate huge amounts of money to charity and health research.

If none of them deserves a statue, why does Captain Tom? Just because he was old?

Well, this person was a World War II veteran. This person was 99 years old when he decided he wanted to fund-raise for NHS Charities Together by walking laps around his personal garden. This person released a single with Michael Ball (
https://www.itv.com/news/2020-04-18/captain-tom-moore-launches-you-ll-never-walk-alone-charity-single-with-michael-ball
) for the same charity. This person was knighted by the Queen Elizabeth II.

A lot of people do donate money to charity, but most of these people are extremely rich and do not have to do certain things -- like Captain Tom did -- in order to be able to share that donation. Furthermore, these people aren't as old as Captain Tom was and these people most definitely didn't have to release a single to be able to donate to charity.

I believe his actions, not necessarily his age, are worthy of a statue. The age does come into play somehow because people imagine, "Wow, a 99 year old person raising money for charity by walking around his garden and releasing a single with a famous musician. That's admirable!" That's exactly what I thought when I heard about Captain Tom for the first time and I still do, even after his death.

May he RIP.

I would support a statue being made of him because he became a national focal point when we needed one. He didn't start the fundraising for the publicity it would bring him personally. He was a true gentleman and his attitude of "tomorrow will be better" was uplifting. I'd rather see a statue of him than, for example, a footballer.

There are many extraordinary things about Captain Sir Tom Moore. Perhaps one of the most extraordinary things about his actions is the fact that the very act of walking caused him pain. He was suffering from pancreatic cancer and skin cancer, and was recovering from a fall which left him with a punctured lung and several broken bones. For me, what was so inspiring was his determination to fight through the pain to complete his goal.

But it's about more than just that. His actions inspired a nation (and possibly even the world) to participate in fundraising activities. People of all ages walked around their gardens in a similar fashion to Captain Sir Tom, earning money for their own charities. That legacy will continue for years to come.

He raised a record amount of money for something that he strongly believed in. He gave people hope when they didn't know where to turn. He inspired hundreds of people of all generations to begin fundraising activities. He served his country during the Second World War, and remained devoted to his country during its greatest peacetime crisis.

Yes, he received numerous awards and recognitions, and a wide variety of things have been named after him. However, a statue would be a lovely touch, and a fitting tribute.
