If you buy a baseball bat and a baseball and your total is a $1.10 and the bat cost one dollar more than the ball, how much is the ball?”

Answer:
the ball was five cents and the bat was $1.05

Can someone explain how??
I just don't understand how the answer is 5c??
If fat means flavour then I'm ******* delicious!

Well, this is where mathematical equations come in handy. Basically, you have to convert the sentence into a mathematical equation using mathematical symbols in order to be able to solve it. Let's break it down.

First all of, we have to use a variables in order to be able to solve this problem. You have two variables in this sentence and these are the baseball and baseball bat . For the baseball, let's set x = baseball. For the baseball bat, let's set x + 1 = baseball bat. The reason why we add the +1 next to the x, which is the baseball, is because, as the original sentence/problem states, the baseball bat costs $1 more than the baseball and that's the way to convert it.

Within a mathematical problem, whenever you see the verb " is ", that means the equal sign (=). So, for the purpose of this specific problem, this is the mathematical equation (equation means equal; =) that we come up with:

(x + 1) + x = $1.10

From that point on, you will solve the equation following the correct mathematical operations and steps, which, for your convenience, I have completed below :) .

I'm not a Mathematician. Equations make no sense to me. As you did in your equation, you had to add a number (+1) in order for the equation to work out. Why do you have to add numbers that are not asked for?

If Dad asked 5 year old Junior how much the baseball was, I doubt Junior is going to spit out a long equation.

Junior: Ya see, Dad, you have to use a mathematical equation to answer that question. We have variables, here, so that has to be taken into account and then it has to be converted. Blah, blah, blah. Oh, and don't forget to add +1 to the equation.

Dad: Why do you have to add +1?

Junior: I dunno. Someone said I had to, so I did.

Can someone tell me in plain ordinary, common everyday English why the baseball bat was $1.05 and the ball was $.05? Without a lot of gibberish.

My answer is: Look at the price tag. If none is available, ask the cashier.

Let X equal the value of the ball and Y equal the value of the bat. Then we know the following:
X + Y = 1.10 (the combined cost of the ball and the bat is $1.10)
Y - X = 1 (the bat cost $1 more than the ball)

Add the equations together:
(X + Y) + (Y - X) = 1.10 + 1
Y+Y = 2.10
2*Y = 2.10
Y = 2.10/2

=> Y = 1.05
=> X = 0.05
