"Nothing is true, everything is permitted." - Assassin's Creed
~ can be applied to all aspects of life universally. The message being: knowledge is unknowable because all knowledge stems from our observations and perceptions and such perceptions can always be deluded, and therefore it would be blind faith to assume that there is "the Truth" or an absolute. The only recourse to understanding is to put faith (to believe that one knows) where there is a practical, ethical, and/or logical reason to do so. Thus, this maxim teaches that one must always use objective reasoning. But moreover, because everyone's knowledge and perceptions are imperfect, one must never assume capriciously, especially that they are "right." Thus, this maxim also teaches to respect freedom of speech and beliefs, because it can never be objectively ascertained that one belief is superior to all others. The world is in shades of grey, not black and white, but neither is it an absolute grey (there are some beliefs better than others). "Everything is permitted" is a paraphrase of "anything is possible." "Anything is possible" because the mysteries of the universe and life are unknown, and again, because knowledge is unknowable and our perceptions can be deceived, things that may seem impossible, be it a dream to promote human rights, a dream to end slavery, a dream for world peace & love, a dream to win Balthazar's stupid raffle (lol xP) or things that may seem unbelievable (i.e. yes even ghosts or the afterlife or whatever) can technically be true. One's choice to believe whether these things are true or not depends on objective reasoning and ethics. Because anything is possible, this maxim also teaches personal responsibility besides liberalism and respect for humanity. A sense of personal responsibility without survival of the fittest. You have a personal choice to do what you can to solve a crisis and to steer your destiny. You may not be able to control it absolutely... (cont.)

... but you do have the power to shape its course.
I can go even much deeper, but it is this message in Assassin's Creed that made me such an ardent fan of it. Unfortunately, currently the Assassin's Creed wikia's article on Assassins are quite... unpolished and simplified in its interpretation of this maxim, and I have yet had the time to rectify that.

But in short, "nothing is true, everything is permitted" while at first seeming to mean "you can do whatever the heck you want," doesn't mean that. It's an observation of reality that teaches one to be first, aware of the polarity and paradox between Truth and Illusions, second to respect human rights, freedom of speech, diversity, freedom of beliefs, etc. Third, to employ objective reasoning while also being aware (and taking into account) subjectivity and empathy. Fourth, to understand one's personal responsibility to steer destiny. Fifth, to be YOURSELF . Because "anything is possible" just because society says you can't be one way or your unique personality is "wrong" does not necessarily mean that you are wrong to be unique or an individual or to be a rebel. It also does not mean you're necessarily right either, but that's the point: it means to be open-minded and do not be an extremist. There is a paradox in here of course (e.g. me being almost a fanatic of Assassin's Creed myself), but the reality is that perfection (an absolute) is unreachable, we can get closer and closer but we can never reach it, but that does not mean that it is well and good not to attempt to reach as far as we can.

For another explanation of the above: read the "Strange book" found in the Wise Old Man's house. It apparently has excerpts, I think by works of René Descartes that expounds more on this concept of knowledge being unknowable. Otherwise, you can also refer to Socrates or Immanuel Kent.

Another quote I love is from Les Misérables : "Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise." Because just because "Nothing gold can stay" (Robert Frost), doesn't mean that... those gold rocks won't spawn more gold eventually :3.... as in, Golden Ages fall, and Dark Ages come, but in the end everything's a cycle, and the future will not always be as bleak as it may seem in the present. Great things fall apart so greater things can come together.

Can mine be a poem? If not, then my quote would be "Even this shall pass away."

I.

Once in Persia reigned a King,
Who upon his signet ring
Graved a maxim true and wise,
Which, if held before his eyes,
Gave him counsel, at a glance,
Fit for every change or chance:
Solemn words, and these are they:
"'Even this shall pass away!'"

II.

Trains of camels through the sand
Brought him gems from Samarcand;
Fleets of galleys through the seas
Brought him pearls to rival these.
But he counted little gain
Treasures of the mine or main.
"What is wealth?" the King would say;
"'Even this shall pass away.'"

III.

In the revels of his court,
At the zenith of the sport,
When the palms of all his guests
Burned with clapping at his jests,
He, amid his figs and wine,
Cried, "O loving friends of mine!
Pleasure comes, but not to stay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"

IV.

Lady fairest ever seen
Was the bride he crowned his queen.
Pillowed on the marriage-bed,
Whispering to his soul, he said,
"Though a bridegroom never pressed
Dearer bosom to his ******,
Mortal flesh must come to clay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"

V.

Fighting on a furious field,
Once a javelin pierced his shield.
Soldiers with a loud lament
Bore him bleeding to his tent.
Groaning from his tortured side,
"Pain is hard to bear," he cried,
"But with patience day by day,
'Even this shall pass away.'"

VI.

Towering in the public square
Twenty cubits in the air,
Rose his statue carved in stone.
Then the King, disguised, unknown,
Gazing at his sculptured name,
Asked himself,"And what is fame?
Fame is but a slow decay:
'Even this shall pass away.'"

VII.

Struck with palsy, sere and old,
Waiting at the Gates of Gold,
Spake he with his dying breath,
"Life is done, but what is Death?"
Then, in answer to the King,
Fell a sunbeam on his ring,
Showing by a heavenly ray --
"Even this shall pass away."

All of them describing me are ironically Dr. Seuss Quotes.

1. Today you are you that is truer then true there is no one alive who is youer then you
2. "Mister" he said with a sawdusty sneeze. I am the Lorax I speak for the trees.
3. Don't cry because it's over smile because it happened.
