Interesting. Also good to hear of people trying to give up or who have already given up (as well as those who have never smoked!).

Many of my friends smoke and I guess its because its developed from a social setting. I still manage to pass smoking anything they offer and I'm happily smoke free :)

I have always had the thought that if a friend of mine keeps offering me to have a smoke, well knowing that I detest it, then it means that they are not really "friends". Yea, I'm fully aware of those friends that do it just for fun and whatnot, but I'm specifically referring to those that are unable to differentiate between those two boundaries.

In any case, I stay strong and I'm too smoke-free ^_^ .

I've never smoked, not even an experimental puff, I hate the smell. I totally support the ban for public and work places. If someone wants to smoke that's their choice but it shouldn't affect other people. Passive smoking isn't harmless.
I grew up with both parents smoking. My Dad gave up when I was 7, my Mum tried to give up a few times but there was nothing to help with the nicotine cravings back then. When I was older Mum would sometimes ask me to put her cigarette out but I refused to touch it and would take her an ashtray. My husband was a smoker when we met and didn't give up until we'd been married a few years. I was very happy when he did although he developed a polo mint habit for a while ( still no nicotine patches etc available ).
My Mum was never able to give up and smoked until shortly before she died of lung cancer. She was only in her mid 60's :( :(

My immediate family and most of my extended family have always been non-smokers.

Back in the 70's, when my cousins and i were young teenagers, my aunt was trying to quit smoking. To help her, we took her open pack of cigarettes, emptied the pack, sewed all the filters together and put them back in the pack. She couldn't get a cigarette out. ;)

In college, to help friends quit i took a more Looney Tune approach and got my hands on some cigarette loads...

I posted on a thread like this some years back so I'll post again as my comemnts may have helped some people stop smoking.

First off I used to smoke in school from 14 to 16 and from 16 to 17 at work. I stopped smoking at work as I was on a bonus system so more product I made more cash I made. Product was cardboard boxes.

I worked out I was losing a lot of bonus so gave up in seconds. Said to my workmate here you go have these free cigs and stopped just like that and never looked back.

Now skip forward to 2005. The time I lost my Mam due to smoking. She had cancer 3 times. First time 1981. Second time 2010. 3rd and final time 2015. All due to smoking.

Having to watch my Mother suffer and go though all the pain was so distressing that a day does not go by whereI don't think about her and her passing at such a young age. All due to smoking. I would hate to see anyone else go through what my Mother went through. She suffered a lot of pain in the end and was on very strong medication right till the end. Her quality of life wasn't good due to this and she was bed ridden till she was taken into hospital. She never came out. Day I'll never forget.

Now roll onto 2016. Day my Dad was told he also had cancer. Came as a shock to us all as he has stopped smoking 20+ years before. Too late really as the damage was done. The cancer wasn't that bad and he was recovering but would not get 100% better. Sadly in 2017 after being told to go on holiday with the family he came back in distress. 2 days later rushed into hospital and 2 weeks later passed away due to complications.

Now if the above real life stories about my family stops 1 person from smoking or stops 1 person from taking it up all the typing out has been worth it for me. It's hard to deal with death in this way but typing about it helps a lot.

So if you ask me stop smoking or don't start it as you will never be the same again and you and your family will suffer in the end.

Heed my words. Tuffty the Wise!!!!

I used to smoke quite heavily but packed it in when the indoor/workplace ban came into effect years ago... the ban also coincided with rapidly rising cigarette prices so it made sense for me to give up.

Even after all this time I still get nicotine cravings, so I sometimes vape.
I'd love to pack that in too eventually.

I started smoking 10 years ago when I was 17. I quickly went up to a pack a day and by the time I was 21 I quit. I went a full year without a cigarette and then one day I bought a pack "just for fun" when I was out drinking with some friends.

I smoked for 6 months, quit again, then picked it back up off and on through the years. Today, I haven't had one in about a month and I don't crave them. I feel like I'm one of the few people that can't become addicted to nicotine so when I do smoke it's more for enjoyment/socializing.

I've never felt that "OMG I NEED TO SMOKE" mindset.
