Kaji Maki, known as the godfather of sudoku, has passed away at the age of 69.
Founder and president of the Japanese company Nikoli, his puzzle magazine of the same name started to publish 'Number Place' puzzles in 1984. He invented the word sudoku (an abbreviation for
Suuji wa dokushin ni kagiru
('numbers should be single') to help popularise them, after which they spread to the UK and the USA, becoming a worldwide phenomenon.
