Nono, they were very much alive (even if on the side of the motorway...). Sat on a few grassy banks. Must'*e seen 5 in about as many minutes.

They're one of few birds I'm actually interested in, aren't they cute? I imagine you see a lot but I don't see very many in town :P

Yep, see plenty, more often than not due to one of my dogs flushing em. Makes me jump sometimes if they are right next to the path as they make a loud noise and burst out into the air. One of the woods I walk regularly is used for shooting, sadly, and as such they rear them there.

They do form small groups, and males can have harems. So seeing a few fairly close isn't too surprising.

I dunno bout cute, I don't really attribute cute to many things other than my dogs to tell the truth, but they do have very smart plumage.

We did have a couple of males who used to come for the hen corn and they'd spar with each other, which was interesting to watch. Sometimes they'd do it in the middle of the road which was an accident waiting to happen lol it never did though.

Well if you ever see similar again kites have very distinctive tail in that it is forked. buzzards tails are fan shaped. Buzzards look more stockier in the wings and red kites more elegant. (assuming you disregarded crows/rooks)

Kestrels are much smaller and as I'm sure you know when hunting will hover in one spot for a period before swooping off to another spot.
