Do you think it's completely subjective?

One reason I doubt it, I don't think anyone could argue pacman is more immersive than Runescape, just for an example.

Is it about the
Story
?
* I tend to think games with a strong story are more immersive
* Relatable characters in believable situations

How about the
Level of Detail
?
* More layers to the story or the world
* Little things that you can stop to notice showing love and care from the devs

Maybe it's about
Realism/Believability
?
* Either a world like ours or at least a world with rules and physical laws

Internal consistency
?

Complexity
? (is this synonymous with level of detail?)

Perhaps it's even
How the Game is Played
?
* For example, are RPGs automatically a bit immersive?
* How about first-person games?
* Real-time games vs turn-based?

Is there a difference between "being into a game", "getting into a game", "I'm really into this game right now", etc. and "being immersed in a game"?

I think competitive, fast paced and exciting games can give you a sense of "being drawn in" which is different from being "immersed". Do you think those are two different things?

I would call Burnout Revenge an "engaging" game, but not "immersive".

What kinds of things in a game are "immersion breaking"?
* Characters who act inconsistently for no reason
* 4th-wall breaks for no reason
* Forced humour

What else?

It's been a long time since I read a good novel and was immersed in its story.

I feel like it could be easier to try and guess what makes a book immersive.

Are the same factors at play in both cases?

Is there such a thing as an immersive book and a non-immersive book, or is it all up to the reader?

Again I think you're not going to find anyone who thinks reading the dictionary is more immersive than reading Harry Potter. Is that just coincidence? Are there other reasons why this would be so?

And the last point, is Runescape immersive? What changes have made it more immersive? What changes have made it less immersive? What changes could be made to make it more immersive? Is immersiveness a goal that is worth striving towards?

Interesting. To be honest with you, I think objectively it could be a mixture of what you mentioned in your first post and then some.

For me personally, the characters, story-line, and attention to detail is what gives me the most effective sense of immersion in a video game. For example, the new player character models that are coming out will have enhanced detail(s) (we will no longer look like human trapezoids, yay). This is a minor detail, yet subconsciously it helps so much with immersion. To have more human-like features as opposed to the triangle shaped ones we have now is subtle yet very beneficial in this sense.

In addition, I think relatability to the characters and stories are super important for me. If the story or gameplay seems completely farfetched, then I'm less likely to feel connected with it. Thus, I would be less likely to relate with it on a personal level which leads to lack of immersion. I prefer realism over sci-fi and other genres primarily for this reason.

Is Runescape immersive? Yes, absolutely. The story, the music, the characters and the quests are truly one-of-a-kind. There are certainly times where I don't feel immersed in the story, but these instances are few and far between. Maybe it's because I grew up on Runescape that I have such an 'at-home' connection with the world of Gielinor, but who knows really :P . I definitely think Runescape captures the sense of immersion to an almost perfect degree, but it's hard to pinpoint the exact reason behind it.

Well, the idea of a "game" is to compete with others.

Runescape is not much of a game, its more of a choose your own adventure story in digital format but it's the suckiest choose your own adventure story because really, there's only one ending, maxed main.

There is no competition in runescape.

Back in the day, even if ya didn't play wilderness pvp, castle wars was a big thing. Although I like wyldee pvp, ya need it to have a competition. Runescape had sucked for a long time. The biggest of all competitions lately are things like "who can train the most xp in 2 hours!?" That's not a competition.

I think more competition would make the game more immursive and enjoyable.
Dear God, please send the competition, feels like there ain't any.
I long lost count of the victories, there were just far too many.
