I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I enjoy most series that cause strong emotional responses, and are a deconstruction of a popular or well known genre, of which Elfen Lied is one. It's probably why Evangelion is my favorite series of all time, and I don't even like mechs. In Elfen Lied's case, it's a deconstruction of the typical harem genre, a group of girls vying for the attention of a seemingly hapless guy. I think what people find interesting and enjoy most about the show is not the violence or nudity, but the abnormal circumstances that bring the characters together. It's so unlike anything else people come to expect that it draws people in, and then the explanation of how these events came to pass generally touches the audience's mind or heart in some way that elicits a emotional reaction. Once you tug at those heartstrings, it's hard to pull away.

Now, if you're aren't the type that enjoys feeling bad about one's self, or feeling miserable for fictional characters, this show isn't for you. And yes, it is gratuitous in every sense of the word. The voice work isn't all that good either, whether you prefer subbed or dubbed. But it's the raw human emotion the show can muster that draws people to it. That's why I enjoy it. Yay, my two cents!

Also, dat intro. It's undeniably beautiful, even if it does nothing to prepare you for what you are about to see.

Started Kuroko no Basket a week or so ago, imo I'd rank it above Chihayafuru lol, tis' amazing. (I don't tend to watch sport anime)

I was thinking of starting kuroko no basket, is it similar/as good as hajime no ippo?

also elfen lied was one of my favourite anime's, I can;t really explain it, was also my first anime but i was emotionally attached to it, it was quite original in terms of plot.

i'm not male and i like elfen lied a lot, you have to compare it to it's manga version to appreciate it, the manga is completely different and explores different genres more fully than the anime does where the anime focuses more on romance, i think the anime was really well made and it is a beautiful love story, although comparing it with other animes the sound track was non existent except for the op and the voice acting was nothing special, so i would rate it quite low even though it was very good
