Ah, the new Higurashi trailer got me so excited. I thought it was supposed to be a movie, but now it's looking like an OVA. I never really watched any of the Higurashi OVAs because everyone said they were terrible. However, that doesn't look to be the case with Outbreak. I'm hoping they go back to the more creepy atmosphere since Kai left me wanting more, but I'll take it or leave it for more Rena and Satako's cute maniacal laugh.

As for ratings on MAL, they're almost always absolutely pointless. I rate just to satisfy my own vanity and I even try to rate below 4/10 sometimes. Still, in that range it's next to impossible. Like Revive said, basically at the point I'm comparing which ones I hate more.

The sequel to Higurashi Kai, called Higurashi Rei, is alright. I'd watch it if I were you.

The one that's deemed horrible is Higurashi Kira. I haven't watched it but apparently it's just completely unrelated fanservice episodes.

Alright, I'll do that.

Oh God, episode 8 of Nisemonogatari... Had to keep checking to be sure it wasn't a Kiss x Sis episode instead. Still, it kind of makes me wonder if brushing someone else's teeth would have the same effect... Probably not, but I'm still curious as hell.

Or its more like the middle three episodes of Rei are the ones you should watch. The first and last episodes ARE just random fan service, one based on an epilogue that got axed from one of the games and the other based on the 'plot' (term used loosely) of Higurashi Daybreak (has anyone ever played that? Its fun). The middle three are a continuous epilogue arc with actual plot and relevance. Kira....yeah, no real defense for that one. Hell, I can only remember what the plot of one of the four episodes was, thats how little impression it made.

Also, if your still after more creepy might I recommend the manga. There are a fair few manga only arcs, some of which are available in English in print.

Personally, I love all things Gundam. Though, I do like my shounen and seinen shows :D . I'm watching and reading Attack on Titan at the moment. Brilliant survival story of humanity vs. giants.

@Jesse

Could you tell me the names of the manga-only arcs for Higurashi? I've been trying to read more LNs, VNs, and manga lately, so if you (or anyone else for that matter) have (has) any good suggestions on any of the three aforementioned (preferably one that don't have an anime adaptation yet or they do but it's not very good in comparison (personal example: Pandora Hearts), but I'm not going to be overly picky) that would be much appreciated.

No yaoi or yuri, that goes without saying.

Well there is a really shocking difference between the manga and anime of black cat (the anime is near unwatchable if you read the manga, but perfectly average if you haven't)

both iris zero and yankee-kun to megan-chan both have fantastic stories but have no anime adaptation in site. Mol(e)ster-man and GTO are both prime examples of slice of life (without any moe relations) and stuff like psyren, one piece and magiif your after more of the shonen genre.
Minamoto-kun monogatari if your after something a bit more adult.

all manga btw

anyway has anyone watched ef a tale of melodies? I'm not sure whether to watch it all not since a tale of memories ended in such a way that it feels like it doesn't need a sequel of any kind

Will do, the manga only arcs are:

Onisarashi-hen OR Demon Exposing Chapter - can be bought in English
Yoigoshi-hen OR Beyond Midnight Chapter - can be bought in English
Uts**sukowashi-hen OR Reality Breaking Chapter
Kataribanashi-hen OR Anthology Chapter
Kokoroiyashi-hen OR Heart-Healing Chapter

Since we're talking Higurashi and you mentioned VN recommendations that dont have a very good anime, might also want to try the Umineko VN's if you haven't already. All 8 of them have English patches, and that the anime was not a very good adaptations is pretty much a common consensus, along with the fact that the anime only ever half finished the job.

Also, Planetarian. Planetarian is an older Key title, (late 2004) and is a fair ways shorter than their other games because it doesnt have any routes or branches, but I think it gains a lot for that in the way of being very immersive in its enviroment.
