Well, I have only seen the original FMA and that was on YouTube. There was FMA brotherhood for a while (in the UK, can't be watched any more), however, I don't know about other countries.
I can only say watch FMA and Conquerer of Shamballa movie allows you to watch the full story. :P
Don't know if you are American, Australian or anything inbetween but, I can't comment, only back up what you said. Sorry. :(

Oh, I'm situated in the UK. I can buy FMA Brotherhood here, and will do so.. If I can find out if it's actually worth buying.
Seeing as I really enjoyed FMA, but I don't want to go out and spend a lot on something that's essentially the same. :|
Yeah, I've seen the movie too. That was awhile ago though, lol.
Thank you though.
(Edited to clarify that I have already watched FMA, but not FMA Brotherhood. :P )

Quite a few events happen earlier or not at all in FMA Brotherhood, at least until Greed (which also happens earlier) after which the series changes quite a lot and goes down a different path compared to the first anime.
The antagonist is different, and a few characters have different designs and motives. Several key things from the first series are also different.
I'll just say that the series might seem too fast and rushed at first, but that's a side-effect of the overlapping content between the 2 series; the producers didn't want to churn out more of the same, so they whizzed through the overlap.

Here in Australia our anime licensor/distributer Madman had Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood on their website for free viewing. They got rid of most of the episodes from their site a few months ago though. If you can find it though I know they at least have the first 1 and maybe a few more still there.
That said though if you haven't seen Brotherhood and enjoyed the original anime I highly recommend you watch it. FMAB is probably just about my favourite anime if I had to pick one and even after watching the original which used to be my favourite this defiantly tops it still.
Oh and as mentioned above the starts are the same and then things do really start to change with the whole plot changed besides that fact that Ed and Al want their bodies back.
If you do decide to buy the DVD's though it might still be a while until they're all out and I recommend you watched the subbed version if you can. So maybe if you can find it online streaming somewhere or download it if you have to so you can see the complete series, the way its meant to be.

The only Anime that I am currently watching is Naruto Shippuden and Yu-Gi-Oh. But I've watched Death Note, Samurai Champloo, Eureka 7, Bleach, Samurai 7, Dragon Ball Z, and Afro Samurai. :)
