I used to be really careless, bought things without thinking how it affected my balance, rarely checked my bank balance, paid bills when I felt like it, etc.

I don't know how anyone can live that way! :P That would scare me not knowing what I'm working with in the bank.

I get paid bi-weekly on Thursdays, I look at what bills I owe until the next check hits and I pay them. That's first. I would love to slap everything on autopay but I don't make that much money to be so carefree with paying that way.

Then whatever I have left over is for groceries, emergencies, entertainment, etc.

It's really hard to budget without wiggle room, unfortunately.

I basically just have a list for my spreadsheet, do you do something more fancy?

I have a list of monthly outgoings with dates that I copy and paste into the main sheet every month.
The spread sheet usually covers about three months ahead so I can see how thing are looking for future payments.

Nothing particularly fancy, I just use the Excel formula functions to add up income, subtract outgoings and display the balance.
Who's the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about?

The best way to make money is to never spend money.

I would say this isn't 100% accurate as you have to spend money on investments and assets that give an ROI.

Yeah, you're fighting inflation if you do that. Cash in the bank is iffy, I try to spend, especially if I can buy something that will resell in a few years for the same price or more. But maybe I am being pedantic, I assume you invest and are just suggesting we be frugal. Which is great advice :D "Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves".

I fly by the seat of my pants these days, but fortunately I can afford to with minimal expenses / responsibilities. That'll change when I end up having kids or change my lifestyle. But until then, I just minimise spending on things I don't need. I have a refurbished phone that I top up twice a year (£20/y) and use free wifi whenever I can. I chop logs for the fire which probably saves £300 on heating per year. My meals are cheap and 'boring' but I am a boring person so I'm fine with that, lol. If I want a beer, I brew my own (2 months makes 40 pints at roughly 40p a pint). I could go on but I wont bore you all. If people on the dole can 'get by' and still drink / smoke, so can we. You just have to augment your lifestyle around your income.

My tips: have physical assets in different forms (big/small, land/gold), have a strong support network / get chummy with your neighbours (power/influence, there are more currencies than just cash), know how to live off-grid / support yourself if you had to. Get a couple of solar panels to run your freezer, you'll be saving £100 a year after it pays for itself. Heat the old fashioned way by wearing layers, heat yourself the modern way with an electric blanket
Bob says:
A bank PIN will keep your items secure.
Always check the second trade screen.
Never trade in the Wilderness!
Keep your computer keylogger-free and virus scanned.
Never give your password out to anyone.

Lol you're forecasting - only 3 months, but still. That is a lot more fancier than what I do.

You are fighting inflation regardless of what you do. I'm not really advocating for anything. I'm just sharing how I manage my money and want others to do the same.

And yay for all your money saving tips. Thanks!

For me, I do a monthly spread sheet myself. Since my house and car is paid for, that is one expense I do not have to worry about. My monthly food expenditure is moderate since I grow and can and freeze a lot of my produce. My husband's nursing home expense is covered by the V.A., as is my medical expenses.

Cut a lot of the streaming services that I used to have. Though I will not get rid of my cable, what can I say I am hooked on mountain men and the curse of oak island.

I have also taught my two daughters how to budget, and the difference between a want purchase, and a need purchase.

This summer, I made an investment in a small scale aquaculture system, with a green house. It was a bit more than I wanted to pay. But it is an investment though. Have tilapia in the tank, so there is another expense that has been reduced down.
Don't ever think the reason I am peaceful is because I do not know how to be violent.

I have never made any budgets. I have an account in my bank where my salary goes into, and all of my payments are taken automatically from that same account. As long as the total amount doesn't go down from month to month, then I am happy. :-)
