Don't worry about it Tuft, as long as your heart is in the right place. I've made plenty of inappropriate jokes and by result, fast-tracked the discovery of who I get along with and who I don't. We're all different, some people are more old-school with their taste in comedy whilst others enjoy having an 'ethical code' for what should or shouldn't be ridiculed or joked about. I've made satirical jokes in that past that have helped lift the mood, and other times have made me a scapegoat. Either way, I've found a lot of it comes down to timing and who your audience is. We all make 'mistakes' and you can't please everyone (nor should we try to). I feel like, since the internet came about, there has been a social divide; it's popular to be offended by things these days. Some people use it as a vehicle for preaching 'their way' or touting knowledge on a social issue. Ego, self-righteousness, holier than thou, etc. A lot of micro social skills have atrophied (or people just haven't developed the ability to social parry / banter). Some people can dish it out but cannot take it. Others love any opportunity to showcase their morality. People play all kinds of games, don't play theirs, play your own.
I think you did the right thing by apologising to the individual you might have affected. Keep doing your own thing, care less what the others think. We judge others by their actions and not intentions but we want others to judge us by our intentions and not our actions.
