Across the world there are many different languages. It is clear that each country has a language that is commonly spoken. For certain countries that may be their only official language.

For example here in the UK the most commonly spoken language is English. Alongside this the UK also has some minority languages. These languages can be heard in specific areas and have a much smaller percentage of speakers.

The 3 most commonly spoken are:

Scotland

Scots
(2.5%)

Scottish Gaelic
(0.1%)

Wales

Welsh
(29%)

I myself am only fluent in English. I have been to both Wales and Scotland but I have virtually no understanding of the other languages. In Wales you will find that things are commonly written in both English and Welsh.

I was curious to find out what languages are spoken in your country? Do you understand any of them and can you speak them? What are your thoughts on them? If your country only has one official language then are there any other languages that you understand/speak?

The United States of America does not have an official language; however, the most commonly used language is English, more specifically, the American English. I am fluent in both English and Spanish. I am an official interpreter/translator so I like alternating between the two. We also enjoy a phenomenon called "Spanglish", which allows the speaker to jump from English to Spanish and vice versa in the same sentence/conversation. It's very entertaining :P !

The top three languages here in the USA are English with 254 million native speakers; Spanish with 43.2 million native speakers; and Chinese with 2.9 million native speakers. Out of these three, I manage to be well-versed in the top two so I think I am all right for now ^_^ .

Although I'm a native English speaker, I live in the Czech Republic, where the official language is (not surprisingly) Czech - which I speak fluently.

Officially recognised minority languages in the Czech Republic include:
Slovak
German
Polish
Hungarian
Ukrainian
Vietnamese
Belarusian

Other minority languages spoken here include:
Romany
Croatian
Russian
English

I agree. I believe its taught in schools and its always the first language on road signs. Recently there's been a campaign to revert the name of Snowdon to its original Welsh name, which I cannot remember at the moment. My maternal grandmother was from Llandudno and spoke fluent Welsh but she died a long time before I was born. :( She could also play the Welsh harp.

I'm glad Top Bass mentioned Cornish ( which I knew about ) and Manx.

Extremely low.

According to Wales.com, apparently based on the 2011 census, Welsh is spoken by 19% of the population of Wales. (source:
https://www.wales.com/about/language/heart-nation
)

However, even this may be a low estimate: according to the official June 2020 Annual Population Survey, 28.6% of people in Wales aged three and over were able to speak Welsh. (source:

Cornish only has about 3000 speakers. As far as I'm aware that is only 500-600 people that actually use it a their main language. Definitely the least spoken language I have heard of.
