I've returned to Runescape after 4 months of quitting. If I returned, you can just call it a break now. The 4 month break was a huge, huge eye opener on daily life, just life in general (I think everyone on the hardcore grind should take at least an entire month off, if you've been at it for a long time). So Since I've returned, I'll tell Jagex what made me return and why I like the game in my returned state. Also, I'll mention some suggestions to improve what Runescape does good already.
So, I made a "I Quit Runescape" thread and it was dramatic. I "prayed for the destruction of Runescape" and you guys got it but I returned and that's when things got wrapped up and in order, at least for now ( I hope I don't jinx anything again ). My main complaint was the heaviness that came with the long-term xp grinds and the consequences of being attached. Now I had my break, I still think the long-term xp grinds are detrimental to mental health (good job on keeping up with the whole mental health thing), but the long-term grinds are what makes the game an MMO, a good AFKable MMO (Runescapes specialty). What made me return was to simply take a good look at life and get priorities straight but what made me return to Runescape was the fact that you can still do the things that are important while playing Runescape. Maybe you can't do all the important things, but with some things you can play RS side-by-side with it. That's what made me return. With that being said, what Runescape does good (AFKability), I think there should be easier access to make more skills/combat/activities AFKable. Still keep the hard earned unlocks but at least provide alternatives to earning AFKable methods. The less focus I need to place on the game, while still getting some okay xp rates (I'm not asking to give the best xp rates), the better. As far as balancing this or adding flexibility, it would be great to add mechanics to the AFKable activities, optional mechanics, to gain more xp while doing it.
I'd say there are already optional mechanics in a decent amount of skills and methods, but yeah, it's good to keep in mind our mental health.
I hope you'll be able to get back to the game without any issues.
Life is like a camera: Just
focus
on what's important,
capture
the good times,
develop
from the negatives, and if things don't work out,
take another shot
!
As far as the main chunks of Runescape, the non-AFKable, I will still be playing that portion, just on my downtime. I think mental health awareness, in association with Runescape, should implement organizing time and doing important things for your life. Taking the time to look at what you're doing just is a natural part of human life, but when you throw the reminder at people, it's always a good thing. It either pushes them further to weigh on them what they should do or they'll know they're doing good already but always mention what RS is for on a side note, in a positive sense (not to fabricate anything but to put things where they should be).
The main parts of RS, for me , the non-AFKable things, can suck up a lot of time but finally receiving those things restitutes the joy in the game. The problem with this is that we go on grinds for soooo long and we receive one burst of excitement. I think there should be more of those bursts, especially for the end-gamers, at least some side things you could do that arent another thing you absolutely have to do (like a comp cape requirement some people feel like they need).
End-game is fun in hoarding things for me or earning a lot of gp/xp.. and building onto what I've already established. Yeah.. I think that's what it is that I like about RS a lot, "Building onto what I've already established". That sums it up for me quite nice. I mean this by things like building your bank, or building your killcount, collecting achievements, earning more xp, gaining more levels, leveling up your base camp (things like that, or like building my house in construction). Skill integration is huge for me in Runescape. I keep saying this because that's the core of what I think Runescape has already that makes it so good. This would look like using agility with hunter or combat with woodcutting jungle involved in the process. An extra tab for skill integration would be pretty cool.
I'd say there are already optional mechanics in a decent amount of skills and methods, but yeah, it's good to keep in mind our mental health.

Thanks.. ya it all boils down to a good awareness of what you can do, what is out there in life outside of a game. This was integrated in me heavily when I took my 4 months off.
As far as optional mechanics, I mean to be able to transition from actively training back to AFK. This would add a much needed complexity to the game. Woodcutting could still get it, Runecrafting in siphoning, more active work in transmuting to speed up the process of gaining more xp (things like that)
Also, I was thinking of suggesting some sort of skill progress tab, where it keeps track of what you skill the most, to be best at that skill the the time being, kind of like how real life works, like if you practice something for so long you're good at it but when you take a break off it or do something else you become rusty at it.
