Profz,
I mean item discussion, discussing items, is fun, or can be.
Regarding the other stuff you mention, I don't comprehend what alternative there is.
If I'm selling an assassin walk, there might be 2 or 3 sellers. A buyer will pm each one of us, and if he wants, he might buy from the cheapest of us. Or, he might go on discord to find more sellers there. Or, he might just wait. Everyone wants an official "price," but there's not always a clear "price" on rare items.
Phats are so high now that some degree of merching is probably needed to reach them.
We've always had scammers. Merchants are known to be one step removed from lurers. The act of merching is itself corrupting. The only way that changes is if the game is turned off.
But separate from that, you have enormous demand for things like walks and phats. With a limited number in game, prices just go higher and higher. It's not necessarily a scam if 10 people want an item and just keep offering more, and more, and more.
Especially after gp was duped. The controversy isn't that there was a dupe. Jagex admitted there was. The controversy is whether it affected the economy. Jagex said no, but prices went up. Maybe things went up for another reason.
But you can't sustain phats at these prices if everything is fake. If there's never a crash, then the rise is real. Manip only works short term. Eventually, the market kicks in.

If a staker logs in who just won some outrageous sum of gp, he might pay double what others are offering just because we're ants to him. Does that trade then become "fake" if he overpaid? If a rwt logs in dumping his hat to sell gp, does that trade then become "fake" if he undersold? If someone panics and over/underpays, is that trade "fake"?
It's not such a simple thing. Crazy prices happen, maybe more often than "real" trades, especially as these items become increasingly rare. Margins are enormous. It's just not all fake, and it's unproductive to get angry.
I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity.
