There are a couple of factors which make something valuable:
Official vs Unofficial Discontinued status
Usefulness
Aesthetics
Scarcity
At the end of the day I think aethetics weigh a lot into purchasing (i mean 3a is worth more than 2a even though 2a is extremely rare, same with stuff like explosive barrels), Official vs Unofficial Discontinued items definitely has a big factor (black santa holds value and is more liquid than SOF tokens), usefulness obviously plays a role for obvious factors (bis items are worth more etc...) and scarcity is probably the least important factor but still has a role (certain items are worth more money simply because they are rare, however it is probably the least important)
