I just saw the update on Terms of Service (seems mostly similar to the previous version). But a question did arise about items on Runescape?

Given the following Terms of Service (ToS) agreement, how can a person ever be scammed if they never owned the item to begin with? According to the official statement below, all your items belong to Jagex.

"You acknowledge that all intellectual property and other rights in any Jagex Product, including without limitation any game character, Account, content, Virtual Currency and virtual items in the Jagex Products are and will remain the property of Jagex and/or its licensors. As part of the license granted under these Terms, you are only granted limited non transferrable, non-sub-licensable permission (which can be revoked at any time) to use such content or Jagex Product, subject to and in accordance with these Terms and solely for your personal and non-commercial use.

NOTWITHSTANDING ANYTHING TO THE CONTRARY HEREIN, YOU ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT YOU SHALL HAVE NO OWNERSHIP, TITLE OR OTHER PROPRIETARY INTEREST IN ANY JAGEX PRODUCT OR ACCOUNT, AND YOU FURTHER ACKNOWLEDGE AND AGREE THAT ALL RIGHTS IN AND TO AN ACCOUNT ARE AND SHALL FOREVER BE OWNED BY AND INURE TO THE BENEFIT OF JAGEX." If you are willing to chuck your most precious possessions like phats because someone said words like crashing/dying/quitting and then find yourself unable to rebuy for what you sold for, then you don't deserve to own a phat.

this does not limit to just jatex my old friend.

in real life you and i are owned too by the thing standing above you and i. the only way to stand above those laws is to make your own law, its simple but fear keeps us in control.

anyways i just saw some of the saw movies, really great.. back on topic.

its exactly as you see it, jatex owns it all so if they feel like deleting the game tomorrow then there is no rs to play anymore.

Disposable is the answer you were looking for, which is rather unfortunate but part of life. trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

I'm more concerned about not really owning my iphone and tablets. With the "Internet of Things" and connection of everything to cameras and microphones; increasingly it seems I'm just property of the alphabet agencies in DC.

Jagex revealing that we own nothing... not really a concern of mine. They might lose data again like before and not want to be sued in court. I doubt some activist JMod will delete my bank because he doesn't like my stand on some foreign war or what have you.

In the end, RS Classic was just turned off. My bank there might be gone, deleted. The same might happen to RS3, one day. So, if we don't actually own things, well, OK. I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity. :(

What I want to know, what truly matters to me, is whether Sea King will obtain his 4th cracker before the game is deleted. Will he make it in time? I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity. :(

I can personally confirm, with own eyes, that this has been obtained already. I almost didn't believe it but there it was:

4 CRACKERS, ONE TRADE SCREEN

First time I have seen a cracker in game and it is 4 lmao

This is not new. This part was not changed in the ToS update today.

Doesn't have to be a new addition to the ToS for the issue to exist. This issue strikes at the heart of everything that is discussed when it comes to items. Players constantly discuss item value, item ownership, item loss, item theft, etc. as if they have own them. On the other hand, so do people in Communist China: people buy/sell the real estate they "own" under 70-year+ leases while the actual real estate is owned entirely by the State because no person can technically own private property there. for me its a realization that nothing lasts forever, everything crumbles to dust eventually. and that hurts because enjoying something should last forever if i would ask myself. i really hope this doesnt mean that they will end the game in the near future. elder god wars is closing in which could mean "gielnor"gets destroyed or in other words the runescape world. thats what i assume and fear. trusting certain pc lists or prices of items or websites that dont belong to jagex will get you into trouble notice: external websites and trades are your responsibility, dont get fooled!.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the phrase, Sea King. I think it is just standard language in the ToS. Blizzard has very similar phrasing for World of Warcraft (https://www.blizzard.com/en-us/legal/fba4d00f-c7e4-4883-b8b9-1b4500a402ea/blizzard-end-user-license-agreement)

"The following components of the Platform (which do not include content or components of the Licensors’ Games), are owned or licensed by Blizzard: ...

Items: Virtual goods, such as digital cards, currency, potions, weapons, armor, wearable items, skins, sprays, pets, mounts, etc.; "

I believe the intent behind these phrases is to forbid RWT and prevent Jagex from having to pay a player if they ban their account.
