On Dec 1st Jagex tweeted that, at the end of the competitive phase of FSW, only 3,511 halos had been earned.

Yet they are worth about the same price as a purple halloween.

Jagex has also said that the halos would be "exclusive to this event," heavily implying that they are truly discontinued.

Why do you think they are still so cheap? Not only are they very rare, but I personally think they are good looking cosmetically.

Thoughts?

because halo season 2 from paramount on amazon prime video hasn't started yet and it's overdue from when season 1 started last year. Don't trust any pc's listed, any advice or talks between posts on ID forums anymore , the Manips are let loose, especially the main one with 15+ accounts posting acting as different people.. do your own research

Despite the rarity, I think there's a variety of factors impacting the price:

1- Competition for head slot rares/discontinued items and other collectibles. There's an oversaturation, reducing the demand for these items.
2- Ambiguous status - Although Jagex has suggested the intention were for these to be discontinued/exclusive, there are folks out there who don't trust that and while that intent was shared a developer did state that he cannot guarantee if other developers might change their mind. The original intention is for them to be the rare/exclusive head slot item for the first iteration of FSW, and for subsequent to have new collectible head slot items with the Challenger Halo returning as the "competitive staple item".

Quote from Mod Frosch:

Mod Frosch
"Hi! The plan was for the Halo of Returning and Luma to be the only exclusive/discontinued 'items' and the Challenger Halo being obtainable through similar competitive periods in the future. However, as I mentioned in another comment recently, I can't guarantee that this plan will be followed in the future, since I don't have the power to overwrite higher-up's decisions if they would like to use these items in the future in some way."

Back to point number #1, I'd guesstimate around 4,000 - 7,000 Halo of Returning based on the total level of accounts and with the understanding that the Hunt challenge took considerable effort. There were folks who ported over to the main game early, and quite frankly people who didn't think it was worth creating one based on the low prices relatively early on. I see Halo of Returning as being quite undervalued relative to other rares, like the Holly Wreath which had a cap of 1,000 but trades for 30 - 40X the price of Halo of Returning.

I think the competition of head slot items, plus perception of new rares being "junk"/ "not O.G" is driving the current price of today.

(Continued)

There's a lot of factors impacting the economy. The GE tax is contributing to deflation, there's an influx of collectibles...leading to diversified investment opportunities and more competition for GP. I think the totality of the above factors are the main reason these are currently sitting in the 200m range. I will say, I personally think it is a bit absurd it is hovering around the price of the purple h'ween due to the difference in rarity. The purple h'ween is a neat looking item though, with it looking and "feeling like an OG rare" due to its exact replica of the original OG h'ween masks.

Who knows where prices for any of these will end up in the future. I think if there's a large hiatus between the next FSW, we'll likely see the prices of the Halo of Returning performing well in the short-term and the long-term to look quite bright if the second iteration introduces a new hunt item (solidifying the discontinued status of the Halo).

Time will tell. :)

Edit:

Another relevant quote from Mod Frosch, explaining their rationale (or at least intention behind these)

The idea was to, in the case that we regularly run FSW events, give all players a new reward to chase every time with the milestone hunt style system, while giving more players another shot at the established, more sparse competitive reward every time."

@Theos thank you for the information! I was not aware of a lot of those JMod comments, so found your post very insightful.

Just as an update, I recently bought some halos as cheap as 203m, but in the last 24 hours sold one for 245m. A few times today and yesterday I could neither sell nor buy a halo for 230m. It feels like there are almost none on GE, super super low volume.

Very curious where they are headed in the short and also long run!
