The combat style you use affects the drop? I remember around 100 kills into learning how to rax with range I received a fang (ofc it was 21m profit at the time). So it is definitely possible to receive fang without maging. Does it increase the likelihood? And if so, based on what source?
It was stated originally on a stream that the style you use you'll get a higher chance of the hilt part being the version araxxor is on.
Range = Web
Melee = Fang
Mage = Eye
Not too sure though seeing as I've had a lot of fang/webs recently and I only use melee.

Also, learned mage, it's certainly not the greatest, but it's worth at low enrage
my personal recommendation is to use a melee switch for the last phase, as araxxi's affinity to mage is superrrr low (45 vs 65 for melee). good luck on fangs all!
