Death note perk from archaeology combined with upgraded bonecrusher seems to auto pick up ashes. While I have those unlocked, I have not tested this. Demon horn necklace restores prayer by burying the ashes. Most use demon horn where feasible.
It's tough for me to say why anything happens in this game now. It might just not be worth the money to those who kill demons and have those things unlocked. Money seems to be worth much less than it was 1 year ago. I cannot for the life of me manage to catch Covid. Perhaps it's because I didn't get vaxxed? The travails of those lacking immunity.
