Started replaying in 2021, seen there was a new character model structure happening. Lockdown finished and stopped playing again... temporarily as always
What happened to the character model updates that I thought were happening mid 2021?
"The status of the rework was not impacted by his (Mod Iroh's) departure. We will be clear if anything changes, but to reclarify: Late summer this year we discovered tech issues with how the heads are put together. The scope to fix it this year was too large."

From what I understand, they said they aren't happy with the way the head of the Avatar is moving with the body, but nothing regarding the status of this project has changed.
They need more time to make the head move in tandem with the body in a more satisfactory way, but other exciting graphics to be announced graphics projects have also popped up this year (I'll guess the leaked VFX and other R&D features), so the team decided it is more like 2022, rather than spending more resources to fix it in 2021.

The reason for the delay wasn’t that they’re not happy with the way the head moves with the body, but that at the end of this summer they ran into some serious technical problems with how the heads are actually constructed and how helmets and hats sit on the head. Over the 20 years of development on the game there hasn’t been one set way to construct the heads so when you change their shape it breaks quite a lot of equipment.
The scope to fix this was way outside of what could be assigned for the rest of 2021 which is why it’s been pushed out to 2022. They’re apparently going to update us soon, but a fix for this could range from trying to blanket fix equipment in some way across the board, to having to remodel every single head object to match the proportions and construction of the new head, which wouldn’t exactly be the most realistic solution given how long that would take.
The only concern is whether it’ll even be feasible to fix. If it ends up something that requires a massive scope of fix like that then it could be indefinitely pushed out or scrapped outright because of the tech budget requirement.
