We have just been briefed that we are going to get another new Necromancy quest on top of the 9 announced on release. It is called Ancient Awakening.

As its name suggested, something ancient that we may have learned but not seen yet in the game will finally awake in spooky month of October. Any theory on what it will be?

Xau-Tak already? Remember we had a Xau-Tak event with 'Til Death Do Them Apart before...

Or something ancient but not the magnitude of Xau-Tak?

It's Vorkath.

--

1. The splash image for the roadmap features Zemouregal on the "new boss" portion of the map. I think both of us know Zemouregal isn't the final boss - at least not alone.

2. We have the following excerpt from the post:

"Necromancy is about the bring two new bosses to RuneScape - and later this year you'll get a third one!"
(meaning - a new boss, I believe you may have thought they were referring to quests here.)

"Our upcoming Quest and Boss pick up
from where the Fort Forinthry storyline left us with Dead and Buried.
Beyond that, we'll leave you to speculate!"

That would mean that the new quest in October is the start of the 2024 season of content from Mod Jack's livestream we've talked about before (which, admittedly, feels earlier than I would have anticipated. Jagex does seem dedicated to improving necromancy on player feedback alone all September though, and all of the content seems to be front loaded for tomorrow before that - Exciting!). It's either that - or due to Vorkath's very nature as an undead dragon, and the seeming hint that Zemouregal will be the one to raise him, maybe Jagex saw fit to bump it up in the pecking order to tie in with the now current necromancy stuff?

I’m not either, to be fair!

I think it’s possible that the meaning of “ancient” is hard to discern as time isn’t exactly one for one between Earth and Gielinor. When not looking at it too hard, the point of the quests name is probably simply indicating that something is being awoken after a particularly long (but not specifically qualifiable beyond a couple ages) rest.

I don’t think the name makes sense for Xau-Tak either though - and my evidence for it being Vorkath still holds.

It can be Xau-Tak but I don't mean we are going to have to face it directly. It may just have its avatar pop up every now and then like the First Necromancer, but we will still have to fight go through a lot of lore, perhaps more than a year before we get to actually fight it.
