As a newer player on a midlevel ironman account, the new Hero Pass is a real miss for me. While I am happy to see an expansion of seasonal cosmetic rewards, and I like the idea of more structured missions, losing XP and other gameplay-related rewards is a huge blow. I get it, the point of ironman is to get XP on your own. I don't think the old dailies really took away that challenge. They softened up the most dated and tedious skills (herblore & summoning *cough*), and provided me with incentive to train them. Skip tokens made it so I felt very little pressure to "dailyscape."
The new system lacks transparency as to how long the daily missions will take. Spending 100% of my time on the skill focus (mining) for the daily mission made it take about 20 minutes - but I wouldn't say that's how I want to spend my time when I log on - laser focused on one skill of the game's choosing. You could say, "then just do other skills," but to me, optimizing time spent to the best of your ability is one of the core gameplay experiences of runescape. Only when I've finished my dailies, my mind is at ease to spend the rest of my play time as I want to. It is what we do, and the new daily mission is both more time consuming and less fun than its predecessor.
I and other irons are also dissatisfied with losing the daily/weekly rewards items. DTDs were really meaningful rewards for HCIMs. We all enjoyed getting a stipend of various tokens. The one thing that doesn't excite us is getting more oddments, when we have very few ways to even spend them.
A few ideas that could make irons very happy:
- Give ironmen access to some of the hero satchels as a compensation for the weekly rewards we have lost.
- Reward ironmen with either XP or materials for completing missions. I like that the special necromancy mission gives a bunch of necro materials, for instance.
- Stop using oddments as a catchall ironman reward, OR add some useful or fun new items to the oddment shop.
