Something is not right with these. I have done 2 since the update. The first one I failed, wasn't totally paying attention and I had Wilderness Sword equipped. My bad.
But now on the 2nd one I was bringing the heat and I BARELY hit the mark. Other players also missed out.
This had been previously rebalanced to give plenty of extra for people to participate. I was normally hitting 3-4X the requirement.
Now it is way too tight. We need more meat on the bone. Again.
I don't see any difference, and it doesn't look like there is any patch note on Infernal Star this week. I always do the special events in more populated worlds, so the chance of the events get ruined by AFKers is significantly less. Try a more populated world later and have fun with the bigger group of companions perhaps?
I missed that last spawn, I wanted to try it on a busier world because I can get more like 6-7X the target damage.
It seems strange the event was slow and suddenly it has become a race to even get contribution. Like it was on release. If the monster HP is the same then it must be other players inflicting way too much damage for some reason.
Enough that 3 other players missed and I barely made it. I'll figure it out eventually. Just need more attempts.
Something feels different, but I can't say I have problems finishing the event on a moderately populated world.

I don't see and don't feel like there is any difference. If there is one change, perhaps I am finishing the Infernal Star flash events with 40-60 seconds left now instead of 20-30 secnds before the update.
So I went to a busy world and got about 8-9x. I wasn't even doing great. That tells me it must be a local problem, and a small number of players on the other world are doing too much damage.
