Hey guys, I am thinking of writing a Fictional Novel with possible payment in the world of RuneScape...
I have heard that referencing a Game in a book is NOT copyright infringement but I still believe it is....
So maybe a Mod can answer...

How much of RuneScape is copyrighted? Is the God's Saradomin and Zamorak copyrighted?
Is Lumbridge and Varrock copyrighted?

I would like to know if I can base my story from RuneScape (And possibly sell it)...

Hey there,

Check out the Jagex Fan Content Policy at
https://www.jagex.com/en-GB/terms/fancontentpolicy

It states, in part:
Original message details are unavailable.
4.1.4 Fan Fiction – you can write stories inspired by your adventures in-game and share these on non-commercial third-party fan-fiction sites like fanfiction.net or archiveofourown.org, provided you do not receive payment for them in return. If you intend to write a piece of fan fiction for a commercial site (such as Amazon, for example), for commercial publication in a physical form or as a paid-for commission for publication or commercial use, then you will need to run this by us first.

There may be more applicable information there, including a section titled "5. Can I sell the stuff I make?" and there is also information provided for getting in touch with Jagex with regard to copyright.

I think referencing Saradomin and Zamorak in your fiction briefing is fine. You may have Saradomin and Zamorak as lawful and evil gods in your fiction because everybody can come up with similar good vs evil conflicts in their fictions.

But copying the stories and other IP Jagex developed for a lengthy period of time is not OK. So I don' t think you can put EGW, Battle of Lumbridge among other fictional stories that are obviously unique and original by Jagex.

Write, yep.
Sell, nope.
Never uses treasure hunter keys. Never buys runecoins or bonds. Never pays extra for 'Premier' status or passes. Never will.

I don't think it is so black and white.

If someone intends to create story content based extensively on Jagex IP, they probably still have to consult Jagex before they publish it even if they don't sell or show any intention to sell it for profits.

AFAIK, recently HDOS has created their own Halloween Content but they were ordered by Jagex to pause it in the future before letting Jagex know first. Mod Ayiza has this comment:

"The conversation with HDOS was largely focused on the above, whilst asking that they pause plans to work on upcoming events, and to also discuss how we could work better with them directly to harness their talents and creativity moving forward."

Let's think of it this way. If everybody is allowed to publish or distribute their stories based on Jagex IP, one person doing it may not cause significant adverse effect, but when over 9,000 people do it, it will leave no room for creativity for Jagex's own team.

Stories and other IP products are only valuable if they are unique and original, not when over 9,000 similar but only slightly different cookie cutters are flooding the market.
