My apologies if this sounds noobish, but when you are assigned a monster under slayer, and you are fighting that monster using magic, is that supposed to expend runes?

I've been assigned gargoyles. I'm killing the ones up in the Wilderness. I have Vanquish and a store of a thousand water runes and 1200 air runes, also nature runes for an Entangle, and of course the rock hammer. I'm set to autocast Surge. One of today's challenges is combat, so I'm killing two birds with one stone by killing my assigned gargoyles. I'm killing away, and I notice my supply of air and water runes is not going down. I thought maybe the challenge had something to do with it, but still no runes used when I finish that and kill a couple more gargoyles. However, nature runes do get used when I cast the Entangle, and air and water runes get used when I attack a pesky spider. It's looking very much like my slayer task is not consuming air or water runes when I use a damage spell, but it will consume nature runes if I use an Entangle. Is that correct?

Welcome to the Evolution of Combat: whenever you use an ABILITY in combat, that ability doesn't cost you runes (or arrows) unless it specifically says that it will. This means that the only time you are spending runes is for auto-attacks and for 'special' spells - making your mage (and ranged) training a lot cheaper now :-) Things may be looking down now, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel;
Do you think I should get off the tracks?

Okay, ran some experiments and, yes, Revolution has something to do with it but it doesn't answer it.

Without Revolution, I Entangle and attack the gargoyles using Water Surge, I use air and water runes.

With Revolution:
> I Entangle and attack the gargoyles using Water Surge as Autoselect, I don't use air and water runes.
> I attack the spiders using Water Surge as Autoselect (no Entangle ), I use air and water runes.
> I ran up and Entangled and attacked some hellhounds using Water Surge as Autoselect, I don't use air and water runes.
> I attack the hellhounds without Entangling them first, I use air and water runes.

There's something about using Revolution in combination with Entangle that results in me not using air and water runes. Revolution consumes runes normally if I don't first Entangle the critter. Is this the way this is supposed to work?

Entangle doesn't have an autocast option, and I didn't know there was a way to get Entangle as an ability under Revolution. It's not among the options on my current Action Bar. But, yes, a manual cast of Entangle consumes nature runes.

Again, casting a spell consume runes, runes can be saved using abilities. Spells and abilities are two different things.

When you cast a spell manually, you are not using abilities, and you need to use runes.

When you are under Revolution, you are using abilities (even you don't manually press any ability buttons) and subject to the rune saving mechanism.
