Hello fellow forumers!

The recent news regarding the RSOF was truly heart-breaking for me, and it's evident that I am not the only player who will miss these hallowed chambers.

However, we don't have long to adapt to what else is out there. Therefore, I have created this thread so that anyone who has already had experience of Discord can:

> Share their experiences with the rest of us;
> Offer us some tips of how we can use it;
> Inform us of the similarities and differences between Discord and RSOF;
> Tell us what we may expect;
> Give general advice.

I want to open this thread out to everyone. If you have any specific questions, please ask them. If you have anything you have learned since joining Discord, please share it.

We, as a community, have to move on. If this thread can help just one person, it will all be worth it.

I would like to start the thread off by asking:

What are the similarities and differences when posting ideas and suggestions for RS?

Is there a character limit when posting suggestions?

Do threads have a relatively long or short lifespan when not interacted with?

Is there a vote system?

Do Jmods interact with the suggestion sub-forum community?

I'm not in the RS discords...but I do know some about how the forum feature operates, having used it in other servers.

What are the similarities and differences when posting ideas and suggestions for RS

Similar, you find the right channel and you make your post(s). Some things are a forum channel, others are a linear-text channel.

Differences, everything is real time. Especially bad in linear chat where it can easily get buried, or multiple people posting at once can split up stuff. Cant color your messages, and there's overall less formatting abilities. Unless you shift+enter, each new line is a new post. So sometimes if you go remove your message for whatever reason, you might have to remove quite a few to get it all.

Positive difference: you can create tags for users to help organize things a bit.

Is there a character limit when posting suggestions?

Standard discord: 2000; Nitro: 4000

Do threads have a relatively long or short lifespan when not interacted with?

Depends on the settings of the forum. I believe the threads themselves will remain visible until closed manually, but the channel list can have the links hidden after inactive time.

1hr, 1 day, 3 days, 1 week are options for auto hiding from channel list.

Is there a vote system?

Emoji reactions, but nothing built into discord itself.

Do Jmods interact with the suggestion sub-forum community?

I took a peak through the read only preview, and sampled a number of threads. I did not find many jmod comments on suggestions, outside a couple areas (like mobile).
note: i only looked in the suggestions/feedback sections on this.
Can I turn in a paper without citing all sources?

The suggestions channel in the RuneScape Discord has a bot that automatically adds thumbs up/down and shrug reactions to each new thread. Outside of the suggestions channel there are bot commands that can be used to create polls within Discord where you select your choice by clicking one of the emoji reactions.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Regarding the linear chat feature, is this similar to Reddit? I.e., when a person replies to another person, that conversation string exists above the second person who replied to the original post, meaning many off-topic conversations are found between the on-topic conversation.

I was hoping it would be like this, where the order of posts are dictated by the time they are posted, not by who they are quoting.

I think we should have a RS Forums Discord. One owned by a Jagex mod and moderated by forum mods (or active forumers with a good record).

The official RS Discord just doesn't have the same vibe. There's more I can add but won't...

Should the forums truly go; almost anyone from here is free to add me in-game.

Unless I'm missing something there is very little discussion taking place on the discord and it's the same on reddit really. looking at the posts most have 1-20 responses.

It's a stupid decision by jagex in many ways.

I'm also looking at the online count on Discord, and it says there are over 17k users online.

However, how many of them are actually active on the RuneScape Discord at this time? Are they counted as online only when the RuneScape Discord is open? Or are they also counted online when they have A.N.Other game Discord open and actually quit RS 2 years ago?

I have another serious question regarding Discord:

Is there a "My Profile" type area that logs all my activity?

I think we all know how useful this feature is here on RSOF. I don't fancy the prospect of searching through what I am seeing now on Discord to find my own posts.

It's the same with reddit a lot online but nobody saying anything.

Hard numbers in terms of actual posts is what's needed.

Perhaps if the forum counter had been fixed when it stopped working god knows how many years ago it would at least make the forums look more alive to visitors.

I mean when people on reddit and discord can say well theres only 3 users so it's dead people will agree, yet we know that's not correct as the counter is broken.

If discord is open then they're counted as far as I'm aware

There really isn't a my profile. you can use the search and filter "from: username" and then it'll bring up their messages, for that server. filter by channel too is possible, date range, etc...few diff options.

And yes, as long as the discord account is online, it'll mark them as active. They do not need to have that specific server open.

A lot of people join big servers, and rarely participate in them. So you could have a server with 15-20k people in it, with only a couple hundred active....and a few thousand have it muted and rarely look in it.

No it'll be something like this:

-------

User 1 today at 6:30pm
Hey what's up

User 2 today at 6:30pm
not much
about to run to do some zammy

User 3 today at 6:30pm
@rolename, wanna go do a boss run tomorrow?

User 1 today at 6:31pm
Sweet, i tried that today.
Didn't work out well
Luckily i had the free deaths toggled.
