Totems not completable

Am unable to complete the totems on Anachronia. When clicking on the rubble where pieces should be I see the message;
"Looking closely, you notice a small recess where a treasure was previously concealed."

There are no totem pieces to reclaim, none in bank, and the pieces are not in my totem bag.

Please fix or help

what happens if you try to drop/destroy a piece? where does it go? Perhaps look at that on a different piece to have a clue? (but don't drop/destroy it all the way of course) I don't know the answer to this btw, just trying to think of a way to resolve your issue. Things may be looking down now, but I see a light at the end of the tunnel;
Do you think I should get off the tracks?

When you open the totem bag it shows a picture of the totem on the right side. Below that it shows the individual pieces. A mouse-over gives some information of whether you own the piece and if it's stored inside the bag. Whatever it says might be helpful.

The left side lets you switch between the totems. I think this one is the totem of intimidation.

When I was doing this, I remember chasing a piece for a few weeks. Eventually I checked the bag and found that I was mistaken. I already had that piece. I needed a different one.
