I don't know if I am allowed to report this here. I wanted to give a heads up to people in clans.

I am a clan leader, and someone has a name, similar to mine, very similar. Their name is AngelBarbeia, but the i, is upper case. This makes it appear as a lower case L.

This is not the problem. The problem lays with them asking my clan mates, for up to 25m each. One of them was able to report this. They almost traded, because they thought it was me, needing money for flipping. I told them, I would never, ever ask any clan mate for money.

I also told them, that any clan mate, will have an orange dot, and not a white one. They should also discuss any transactions, or lending to a clan mate in cc. I also said that their clan mate, will have a rank to the right of their name, in the clan chat tab.

I wanted to put the word out there, to warn others, and let Jagex know this is happening.

Best Wishes,

AngelBarbela (with a lower case L) =P

Unfortunately, this is a scam that has been making the rounds of many clans recently.

The best thing to do is make your clan members aware of it, explain how to tell the real clan leaders from the fake, as you have done, and ask them to report it in game if attempted again.

As Tren has said, this unfortunately has been going around clans for a while now, and is relatively common.

Make sure your entire clan knows to be aware of this scam, maybe have clan mates add at least the senior ranks from your clan to their friends list - and to be wary of anyone who is not on their friends list but appears to be a acting as a clan mate.

As you have said, discuss the conversation in clan chat, and stress that you - or any other clan rank - would never ask for gp or items from anyone for any reason .

Continue to stress these things, so that all clan mates are aware of the possibility that someone could do this to them.

Knowledge is key here, it seems very obviously a scam when you read about it here. but in game when you are unsuspecting. and someone you think is a trusted clan mate asks for help, its very difficult to say no.

This happened in our clan as well, at least one person I know got scammed out of 18 mil. I feel badly that he got scammed as it was my name that he thought he could trust. (They used an uppercase "I" instead of an "L". They also were not clan members but had joined as guests in clan chat. I don't ask for things myself in clan but there are many that do and it is hard to say no...

Anyway, thanks for posting this thread.

Check your clan list for any impersonators. Depending on how strict you are with your recruitment, they could join clan and change their name while leaving clan chat, which could give them the orange minimap dot. You can also ask your clanmates to add you as a friend, and check before adding you "again" so as to leave a green dot, not an orange one. This way, even if they do add you, they can see previous names. You can even ask them to add you and add a description to the account. Have to stay one step ahead of the scammers! Or just make it too much work for them :P

I'm a deputy owner in an emerging clan, and we've had issues in the past with players using names similar to mine and other owners/deputies looking to profit off of unsuspecting recruits. The best thing to do I've found is to simply remind members periodically that as an administration we will never request financial help from members and if anyone receives communication from someone claiming to be one of us, they should report it immediately to someone else in administration.
