Help - Customization Bug?

When I try to customize my outfit, I'm unable to equip my new letters from the dead weapons or anything other than the shell in my off-hand slot. For example, if I equip my coral dagger in my off-hand slot and select "apply" it disappears from my outfit. Same thing if I try to put my scythe on. Today the issue seems to extend to all weapons.

Is this a bug, or am I confused about how customization works?

Please help.

Experimented some more and it seems like the items will only equip as a customization if I am holding a similar item? Like, if I have a shield equipped, I can't make it look like a sword, but i can make a sword look like a dagger or a stick?

Yes, that's basically correct. Each cosmetic override will only affect a certain class of items.

The crypt shieldbow, for example, only overrides bows. It won't work on crossbows or throwing weapons.
