When I logged in the other day, there was a bot at the GE spamming a "youtube giveaway". Naturally, this is a complete scam and most are probably aware of that. As per usual, I reported the bot in-game but thought to myself, why stop there? I went on said advertised youtube channel to investigate the scam. On the video comments, there were instructions to post one's name on a linked "rs topic", which so happened to be a phishing website. I filed a report with both youtube and the domain name registrar. Today the registrar replied, saying they have taken action:

Youtube has yet to take action, but I must say, I am impressed with how swiftly Freenom handled this. I bet this isn't the last we have seen of this particular phisher, but it was encouraging to see that reporting makes a difference. :)

So, if you do have the time and inclination, make a difference!

That's great news. I will take note.

On another positive note. I've been doing my Christmas giveaways again this year which take place in W3 GE. And although I've only done 2 of 4 (The first being 11am so was rather quiet). There is substantially less spam bots and doublers and scammers around (still some but it's manageable to report them all in their current state).

I did however get 3 Jagex pmod status pms during a single hour.

I once reported a guy who hacked a bunch of my friends to the FBI. I don't know if they attempted to prosecute him because he was in Canada, but they were extremely interested in the web-hosting company he was using for his website.
Haven't heard from him since and his website/domain hasn't cropped up again. So... yea I guess reporting does work. Either that or it was the various pornographic magazines I signed him up for and had mailed to his family's house, or the hours of repeated phone calls I set a macro up to dial his land-line.

One of the two. Probably the FBI. Yea most likely them.

For every website that's taken down, 10 more pop up though. Informing players that it's a scam makes a bigger difference and it seems most players already know. I don't think they updated the Stronghold of Security with more relevant questions though (if there are still any questions, haven't been there since they nerfed all the creatures).

There would be far less RS phishing sites if nobody would fall for it. There should really be more warnings ingame.

Walk around the GE once in a F2P world and you'll receive some PMs from spambots.

Nice that u have got one down, but unfortnatly they pop up like mushrooms. I usually report + ignore them and sometimes tell a friended Pmod where one is so he can mute if he has time. Ceecs - leader of Ceecs Clan

I dont think this makes a difference to be honest. the site was shut down another 10 or more will pop up in its place & the people who wouldve been scammed by it will still be unaware and get themselves scammed in the future all the same.

The only reason these things exist is because people allow themselves to be scammed so the only way they wont be scammed is for them personally to be educated about it but some people are just ignorant and greedy and wont read the warnings, wont care about the warnings.

Its amazing how many people who ive seen been phished and lost all their stuff & didnt set a bank pin, first thing i say is why didnt you have a bank pin set.

There are a few extra measures that could be taken in game to help make people aware but theres a balance between getting that message across and interfering with gameplay.

One idea could be an automated message in public feed every now and again warning people about spambots, or as mentioned an updated stronghold of security.

Oh yea i remember those, i thought they were still there but i dont read the lobby much anymore, yup all those are good things to have.
