Disclaimer: This thread is not intended to discuss the RuneScape Rules nor encourage people to break the rules. It is intended to open a discussion about complying with the RuneScape Rules outside of the game, encourage Online Safety and discuss topics related to Clan Diplomacy and Community Management.


As the owner of one of RuneScape oldest communities, I've always collected some personal information from my RuneScape Friends.

Jagex has always been very discouraging about doing this while still accepting most Clans do it anyway to some degree in order to operate outside of the game.

And so the questions became:
- How do you contact your Clanmates outside of the game?
- How can people find your contact info if you can't share it in-game?

With the release of new Social Medias, we've ditched MySpace and many Fansites adopting Fandom, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Reddit on this game. We've ditched Skype and TeamSpeak switching to Discord. And most importantly, we've seen many many amendments to the RuneScape Rules .

But where do we draw the line? What is acceptable in 2017?

We know we're not supposed to share our contact info in-game.
Many of us learned that lesson the hard way by getting muted.
But we also learned that we can hint people to "google us".

This troubled me as a Fansite Owner because then I wondered:
- How much do I let my own Users share on my offsite website and group chats?
- How do I comply with the FTC, RFC, GDPR, COPPA and Jagex to make sure my Users are safe?
- What other privacy policies do I need to keep my Users information safe?
- How do I handle all of the contact information I've collected over the years?
- What can I do having all of this personal information on thousands of real people?

Obviously, I'm not a bad guy. I've invested a lot of real money to ensure we retain a good online reputation . But in my time running an online community, I've met a lot of bad people. I've been trolled, cyber-bullied, spammed, phished, hacked, ddosed, doxed, etc. And I understand I exposed myself to a lot of this and a lot of worse things could happen. But I wanted to say that I am grateful to have received support through my tough times which is why I do what I can to pass it forward as a Community Helper .

You guys know, people call us crazy. Why would we deal with all of this crap and run a Clan? I've had a lot of Clanmates tell me, "You're the best Clan Leader I've ever had in all of the games that I've played." And honestly, I don't know if that's a compliment to me or an insult to other Clan Leaders. You know, is it really that I am that good or is it that they've met a lot of really really bad Clan Leaders? And we know 'cause a lot of us are only here because we just got fed up with dealing with other Clan Leaders and decided to just run a Clan ourselves. Better to have the power to make a difference than to have to let someone else do a bad job taking care of the problems.

When it comes to cyber security, we always talk about prevention, monitoring and disaster recovery. And in Clans we talk about Rules, Ranks and Policies. I've edited ours around 40 times or more in the last 10 years. You would think people would have "common sense," but they don't. We kinda have to put this public clan documentation in writing to be fully transparent with what we do. And it takes time. I haven't updated our Wiki Documentation because I haven't even finished updating our official Website Documentation. And then we have to moderate to prevent people from oversharing private information.

So anyway, I don't know how you guys feel about the RuneScape Players Wiki.
They were talking about merging or deleting some of the other ones.

I just wanted to say that I can't even deal with the RS3 Clan HiScores . They're pretty useless, making it nearly impossible to determine whether a Clan is dead or alive.

You'd think that with today's social medias and online organization listings it would be easier to find and connect with people. But what I've found is that there is a lot of information and nothing connecting it or even worse a lot of the information you can find is outdated. O_o

So my questions to Clan Leaders are:
1) What are you doing to get your Clan found outside of the game? #DigitalMarketing
2) How do you contact your Clanmates outside of the game? #StayingConnected
3) Do you use any social medias for RS? If so, why do you like them? #SocialMediaManaging

I use twitter and my clan is in my bio, and some of my clan members who also use twitter have the clan twitter in their bio also. (I've never told them to do it they just seem to have done it lol.)

In addition my clan is also in my forum signature so that helps when advertising also.

We used to use Skype back in the day. I had about 110 clan members in the Skype group. We have since moved onto discord and have 200 clan members join.

The clan members know my Skype/Discord/Twitter and some who I've known a super long time have my phone number so we have iMessage/Whatsapp and texting as well.

3) Do you use any social medias for RS? If so, why do you like them? #SocialMediaManaging


I do use social media (@Nice_Timing (shameless plug) ) - I use it because there are tonnes of Jmods and players who use it who share cool stuff. With the jmods you are always able to ask them questions about content/let them know about problems or just in general get help or advice.

With the players side - I've seen some amazing artwork and videos made by the community which I would have otherwise not seen should I have had not been on twitter.

4) How are you currently searching for other Clans info? #Research


I usually check RuneClan and also check to see if they have some sort of clan thread on the RuneScape forums.

5) How does your Clan preferred to be contacted? #Diplomacy


We have a very open door policy - so people can come guest in our cc and ask and all the admins have their pm on and should someone need me in specific a clan member can contact me on discord or the like and I'll come online.

6) Is there anything else you'd like to mention about related topics?


Not that I can think of at the minute - but when I do I'll be sure to post.

Right, so I want to say something about the RS Players Wiki thing (look at my signature for context). The discussion for that started more than 4 years ago - so it's unlikely anything further about it will happen. Next, it was discussed because there were multiple "Player" type Wikis, and we needed some unification. Thankfully, the rsplayers Wiki was the largest, most organized, and had the best-written articles on it, so everyone migrated to that one.

We have Facebook and Twitter pages, though I've left them somewhat inactive.

2) How do you contact your Clanmates outside of the game? #StayingConnected
We used to have a large Facebook group chat and I would friend members on there, but we gradually migrated over to Discord because it's easier and there's no personal info being shared.

3) Do you use any social medias for RS? If so, why do you like them? #SocialMediaManaging
Facebook and Twitter accounts, but I barely use them. I probably would if I had to say a major announcement.

4) How are you currently searching for other Clans info? #Research
RuneClan, RuneClan for everything.

5) How does your Clan preferred to be contacted? #Diplomacy
Private Message a high rank, or get in touch on Discord. If you join the CC as a guest and act confrontationally, you'll get kicked very quickly.

6) Is there anything else you'd like to mention about related topics?
Not really.

I mostly stay with game we have Facebook but i want to push discord

Most of my clan are media shy and discord has over 100 clan members listed . Getting them to use it is a different story but im very pleased so far.

Im not bothered about other clans stats

We do have our own clan site, so if u google us. We are probable the top hit. We also have a forum thread on the Dutch RS Forums and Lunagang (dutch fansite).

My Co-leaders I can contact on Whatsapp. Other clannies I message with a private message on our site or Discord.

Beside our Official Twitter, Twitch, Youtube account not. We do have a fanpage on Facebook but a clannie made that and is currently inactive.

Usually I go to Runeclan or the clan page on RS

Best by joining our clan chat in-game.

You know I realized after reading all of this and doing some digging on a few things:
- There are case studies on Social Media from 2015-Present
- Social Media can finally be used as privately as you want to use it
- Websites now have better security features and there are guides for it

And so as we're growing this thing...

1) What are you doing to get your Clan found outside of the game? #DigitalMarketing

- We've had business listings/backlinks since 2006 and we just keep making more. So a lot of people find us through Google. But at this very moment, we're networking trying to build a new team to manage the community after we finish the early stages of our expansion.

2) How do you contact your Clanmates outside of the game? #StayingConnected

- Skype, Discord, Whatsapp, Facebook Messenger, TeamSpeak 3, Viber and Twitter.

3) Do you use any social medias for RS? If so, why do you like them? #SocialMediaManaging

- Only Twitter so far due to the anonymity. I've recently connected with some of my oldest friends in the game via Facebook and LinkedIn, but as of right now I'm only doing that we people I've known for years who I know for a fact are adults. And so the concern I still have is the children that play this game.

4) How are you currently searching for other Clans info? #Research

- I've noticed a lot of Clans publish their documentation on their Clan Chat's Forum because it's accessible from the Vexillum. But more established Clans put it on their websites, voip servers/groups or wikis.

5) How does your Clan preferred to be contacted? #Diplomacy

- We preferred to be contacted via our website. Filling out one of our forms would send me a notification email.

6) Is there anything else you'd like to mention about related topics?

- I need to talk to a business lawyer because I simply cannot find the answers to all of the questions I'm having in regards to the documentation I need to have available including the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. O_o

1) If by this, you mean recruiting, we usually recruit here on the forums or in RuneGroup on Facebook. We don't usually recruit in game since people are too lazy to open their browser and fill out the application required to join our clan. I don't personally use Twitter because the character limit is so bad not gonna lie.

2) We have a FaceBook group and a Discord. But it is extremely hard to communicate with people who aren't on these things. Which is why I think broadcast settings should be expanded to all clan functions, not just events.

3) I only use Facebook, RS Forums, and I'm also in the Clan Leader and Runescape Discord servers.

4) RuneClan all the way. We would not be able to do anywhere near as many things or be as organized with RuneClan. As far as I'm concerned, RuneClan is the best thing that's ever happened in regards to clans.

5) Contacting specific people in the clan: Depends on the person really. I usually try not to message on Facebook because Facebook holds a lot of personal information that Discord doesn't, and I don't want to pry or make them feel uncomfortable for contacting them this way.

Contacting the clan as a whole: Guesting is usually the best bet, but my PM is always on for anyone who has questions or wants to join. I also have a few people active on our forum thread who will usually contact people when they submit an application.
