Frequently Asked Questions
I’m new here. How do I Vis Wax?
You can check out the guide above (Post 2) on how to Vis Wax. The basic fundamentals are there.
Why shouldn’t I always be using the green smiley face rune?
Simply put, alternates (alts) are calculated based on the formula:
(Price of Wax * Number of Wax) – (Rune Cost * Base Rune Number)
This is determined for each rune in each slot. The Rune that gives the highest number would be the most profitable, hence in most cases is the alt.
But I don’t get it. It is smiley face and green so it should be most profit, right?
Not always. Take Dust Rune as an example. If you use that Rune, you need 500 Base Runes. At the time of this post, it is roughly 2,500 GP per Rune. Air Rune, on the other hand, is around 30 GP, but you need 1,000 Base Runes.
2,500 * 500 = 1,250,000 GP if using Dust
30 * 1,000 = 30,000 if using Air
That is a difference of 1,220,000 GP in just the cost.
Now let’s say you get 30/30 for Dust in slot 1. Using Air as its alt Rune gives you 25/30.
At the time of this post, Vis Wax roughly sits at 20,000 GP per wax.
30 * 20,000 – 1,250,000 = -650,000
25 * 20,000 – 30,000 = 470,000
In this example, using Dust, even though a green smiley face, still makes you lose 650,000 GP instead of making a profit!
Okay, but what if I crafted the Runes myself. That removes the cost of the Rune, right? Wouldn’t that just make me get 500,000 GP profit?
Sure, if you’re going to look at it like that, let’s take the opportunity cost.
Using 500 Dust Runes, I make 30 wax. My overall profit is 500,000 GP.
I sell the 500 Dust Runes on the G.E. instead and make 25 wax with air. Not only do I gain 1,250,000 from my sale of Dust Runes, I also gain 470,000 in wax profit, so I end up with 1,720,000 GP profit!
